It really is incredible what these teams are capable of and what they continue to do on a daily basis.

Still praying for Cile's family. I recently saw news articles saying that the remains of a six-year-old girl lost in the Japan earthquake and tsunami were discovered and identified 14 years (!) later, so it is far too early to give up hope for them. https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20251017/p2a/00m/0na/044000c

Also praying for the families of the others who were lost; the 24/7 news cycle has moved on, but they are still in their first year of grief, which for many is the most devastating.

We are right there with you. The pink ribbons look pretty bad and ragged, but our prayers continue with a patient faith in our Lord's Peace and Mercy for all impacted by that storm. For my family, this is the month specially set aside for prayers for All Souls who have passed on through death, those names are forever remembered. God bless to all who come to this post.

Heart O the Hills is moving across the road from Camp Stewart with new owners. Riverbend lodge property and the people that currently own that are going to build the new HoH there.

Two lawsuits filed against the Eastlands and Camp Mystic: one by the Bonner, DeWitt, Bellows, McCrory, Landry, Childress, and Ferruzzo families (Lila, Molly, Anna Margaret, Blakely, Lainey, Chloe, and Katherine, respectively), and a separate one by the Peck family (Eloise).

Absolutely heartbreaking.

Agree. Just wish this was the most important thing to everybody. It should be all about the dead girls and their families.
And I evaluate people by their actions. Not their words.

3 of the 4 petitions so far. The details in here are hard to read and there are targeted elements each of these go after. My understanding is the Austin families will file two additional suits in the coming days targeting other aspects for a total of 6 representing 19 of the departed.

An additional story from the Daily Mail:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15278569/Camp-Mystic-lawsuits-neglect-floods.html

As someone who knows nothing about lawsuits, what is the advantage of smaller groups filing separate suits? Would it not be more advantageous to file collectively?

There are lots of different reasons but a couple is each might have a different viewpoint on the strongest arguments, comfort with attorney leading the case, closeness of families in certain groups, etc. Lawsuits are traumatic experiences so that could be a big factor.

Continued prayers for all involved.

If you believe the families are aligned for a moment (which might not be true) the lawsuits so far each are subtly different in their approach. Some are latching onto the actions that evening, some are to the actions leading into it. The two additional cases are supposedly going into yet different elements.

This is going to be fantastically expensive to defend. Contrast to HOH that had an angel investor come in and move the whole operation to a safer spot on the north fork. Can't see that happening here.

I'm following closely because I want to see how many teeth are in the liability waivers all of these people signed. It will be something to La close attention to. Depending on how this goes, a dangerous pretender may be set. This is why we have attorneys. A necessary evil.

As a doc who has been sued once (and won) in a forty year career and have served as an expert witness several times, I can tell you liability or consent forms mean squat in a case like this.

Am I reading these correctly in that Dick Eastland had all 14 Bubble Inn campers and the two counselors in his Tahoe?

These accounts certainly paint a pretty damning picture of the response (or lack thereof) of the CM leadership the night of the flood. Wow.

The lawsuits will totally destroy Mystic. They'll probably have to sell the whole thing. It'll be high end river homes in no time.

Wish you would create a new Topic to discuss lawsuits concerning the July 4 Flood.

Agree. It is not going to be pretty. And whoever decided to try to open up Mystic next year made a huge legal and or PR mistake.

I think a well drafted liability waiver coupled with strong procedures might be helpful had the camps been full of adults only, but since it involved children I doubt the waivers will help those being sued. I would think the liability waivers in this instance would not be enforceable.

As an outsider looking in, these lawsuits appear to be more revenge and anger than eliciting change. Going scorched earth on the tradition.

*edit- sorry it didn't quote the person I was replying to. They were talking about Stewart adding another short term*

Waldemar did the same! They added a 1 week short term after 2nd Term. So now it's 1st short term, 1st term, 2nd term then 2nd short term.

Also, I have stepped away for a while as my cousin, who was directly involved with search efforts and found several people and campers (including her camp bff's daughter, Virginia Hollis), was told to leave. State and Fed took over, so they had to stop search efforts. I didn't have any direct input anymore. But I come back time to time.

I don't bother my cousin too much about it because it's very traumatic. It's interest to see the shift of sorrows and hope to anger and justice seeking. It's natural and okay. It's very important for all of us to be compassionate and find empathy for those directly affected. Find common ground, put ourselves in each other's shoes.

Derm, I saw a totally different side of you, not a bad thing, a very human thing. I cannot imagine what you all are going through! You losing a loved one while Watching your loved ones lose a child. Thats multilevel sorrow. You cry for yourself and for others who are crying for the very same reason. It's totally natural to be so angry at the negligence and demand justice, and accountability! I'm hoping that whatever transpires helps settle your soul, even though it will never bring her back nor fill that void.

We all gotta remember we are human and we screw up. A part of that curse of living on Earth, is that we live in death and chaos. How we handle that chaos is how we find peace and love. Reading you all go back and forth and be apologetic, compassionate and kind is a true testament of love. I just wanted to say that!

As a camp waldemar ex camper, ex counselor and now mom of a now 9 year old going first term next summer, this whole situation is not lost on me, it's as ENGRAVED in my heart as a James Avery charm! Waldemar's actions that night were timely and safe. They are on the north fork, so an entirely diff flooding situation, but they also reacted early, and I'm thankful because I know my daughter will be safe. They are no longer using the lowest lying "kampong" (as they are called), Happy Haven. Which I'm sad only because I stayed there my first year, and my mom stayed there her first year, so we were hoping my Charlotte would have that chance too. But both my mom and I are not too sad because we know it's the best decision. Waldemar flooded, but Kampongs sit so far back from the Guad. As a camper and counselor that wasn't ever a worry, we had shelter in place plans, and IF water got high, we just moved up hill to another cabin high up. Water never got high. In late 90s early 2000s there was a flood during offseason, and that was the highest it ever got there, and it didn't mess with kampongs. So to hear that water still got High enough to happy haven is crazy to think about. I don't know how Stewart is set back from the river, and HoneyCreek. Those are also on north fork.

Anyone know about Longhorn? They are on south fork but further downriver from Mystic, right? I just don't know if the cabins are right on the river.

I wonder what camps took what actions when and why they chose to take certain actions or not. I saw earlier La Junta didn't get warning, but saw a table floating by and took action just before peak flood. If there was loss of life we would have another mystic situation. And HoH wasn't in session, but if it had been… I hope the state or county puts in warning systems, like I heard comfort had. You can't rely on cell phones warnings, especially in Hill country in Hunt. If a siren goes off, everyone hears it and jump into action instead of waiting for staff to go door to door to relay the message. (Waldemar does have a PA system) but if power goes out, it won't work, not sure if they used it that night either).

Sorry I'm rambling. I'll keep chiming in and reading. Still praying to find Cile. I don't think mystic should open til all is sorted out. There are other ways to make money and live beside ms running a camp . God provides 2 days of bread on the 6th day, so that you don't need to go out and collect it on the 7th day, trust in Him, mystic needs to realize this and not open. If they go out to collect their bread on the 7th day after collecting plenty already, it won't end well. Clearly the consequences of announcing a reopening already begun

Death is such a stark reminder of our mortality. The thought of these young lives no longer among their loved ones, still taking part in all the wonderful aspects of "Family", breaks our hearts every day and especially during the holidays. We cannot possibly know what these families are going through, but we can lift our hearts in prayers to our Loving Father who does know. We pray every day for Jesus to cover them with His Peace, Mercy, and Love. The Fairchild Family
