Question for the outdoors board.

My parents have some land outside of Oakhurst and just realized that a fairly large fire is burning across two power lines.

I'm not sure what resources are around to help so I told him he could try and make a firebreak with his tractor to contain it from spreading across to the other side of the power lines.

Is there any other advice you guys have that I can pass along?

I'd call 911 ASAP and say it is on an Entergy transmission line and you are afraid it will cause a massive fire and electrical outage for lots of folks! Then call Texas Forest Service.

Just got an update.

Local fire showed up and a lineman is en route. Looks like with the wind, the back half of the property is going to be cooked.

My trail camera recorded a pretty cool sequence of events before the lens melted… the highest temp it registered was 168

Purchase one of those trucks used on construction sites to keep the dust down and put the fire out, consume beer and bourbon relishing in the fact you are a man among men.

That is pretty cool to get info from the heat. I guess it didn't damage the SD card?

You are probably using a cellular cam, my bad.

Somehow it survived Internally. I wouldn't recommend SPYPOINT for other issues, but the fact that it continued transmitting was impressive to me.

I would not be driving or walking under those (several hundred kV) lines if the towers in the immediate vicinity were in a fire or close to it.

During a drought if the ground is too dry, it decreases conductivity into the soil so much that there is much more attenuation in the lines and inadequate grounding for long spends and at the first ground that is still good for a long stretch, too much current will dump into that ground and it will get hot enough to start a fire, or arc to something and start a fire.

Morning update:

The fire is contained. Thankfully multiple VFD's responded and were able to bring out equipment to create a firebreak and stop the spread.

There are still some hotspots but the rain coming this afternoon should take care of it.

Suprisingly, the camera survived! The camera mount had failed somehow but when my dad picked it up, I got a picture sent to me!

The truck you are referring to is called a water truck, I know, very creative naming

The Texas Public Utility Commission is implementing new wildfire mitigation requirements for all electric utilities through House Bill 145, which mandates detailed plans for risk areas, includes provisions for vegetation management, infrastructure hardening, and emergency procedures like public safety power shutoffs.

This is a big topic in the electric utility world. The utility I work for has already been working on wildfire mitigation couple years ago.

Make a fire break with the tractor. It's the same thing the dozers do or us. Just make sure you do it far enough back to where it wont over run you while you're doing it. They move faster than you think.
