Does any one have a hanging gambrel they like? Ours suck and looking for something better. Mainly use for whitetail and we hang by the hocks and needs to be able to attach to the end of a hanging winch. TIA
oh no

gambrels look like pretty simple devices. can there be much difference between different brands/manufacturers?

I was just going to buy this one- the 1000lb one for $20 or the 1500lb one for $30..

edit: academy also has one rated for 440lbs for $15

buy a length of strong chain and put it on the FEL of my tractor and voila- mobile carcass hanging setup.

Be selective in what you get. I have one from Amazon May years ago that must be for hanging small dinosaurs. It will lift a car, but it's also wide enough that it can be a chore to get legs apart far enough. Lol.

I'm a fan of this style of gambrel:

I know this isn't the norm but might try hanging by one back leg. I skin one hock, place hook in it. Raise it up. Start skinning and remove the free hanging leg as soon as you get the skin off of it. Finish everything else like normal from there. It's easier in my opinion but everyone freaks out when I try to show them how to do it.

Used one a couple of weeks ago like this. I liked it, easy to make with a piece of pipe and some cable or even regular rope.

I don't clean them like that, but I've seen gambrels before that have longer hooks that curve up almost vertically so hind quarter #2 and the rest of the carcass don't fall to the ground when you remove quarter #1.

If I was buying a new one, I'd look for one or make one like that.

Example in link below (I hope).

That is one of the major advantages of the Pipe and wire rope type I mentioned. The legs will also be secure until you release tension. And they're also cheap/easy to make.
