Looks like it could be a long weekend in Beeville...

Bah. The models zeroed in on us overnight. The NHC 3 day forecast is usually very reliable with these deep storms. I guess we'll see what they say once it gets off the Cuban coast tonight.

jeaze...this is scary....

And..... the official forecast track has moved north away from us again. The models will run tonight at 7 so expect it to change again when they do the 10pm update.

quote:
The GFS and NOGAPS have a different pattern...with
more ridging extending westward to the north of Ike that keeps the
hurricane moving basically westward. The ECMWF has done very well
with Ike thus far...and has relatively high skill in forecasting
the large scale patterns at the longer ranges. Out of respect for
this model the official forecast is shifted slightly slower and to
the right of the previous forecast...and is pretty close to the
dynamical model consensus.

Oh and I think a couple of the GFS based models will update at 1pm.

From Joe B:

quote:
The problem here is speed of the system. The GFS is fast to the west, and if that is the case, the implication is the stronger ridge to the north gets the storm quicker to the west and then there is no turn northwest till after landfall near BRO.

He believes it won't be that fast though and will turn north with a hit around Corpus. He expects the models to shift north this afternoon.

Have you ever tried to buy homeowner's insurance in Corpus Christi when there's a hurricane in the Gulf?

it's pretty much impossible.

Dr. Jeff Masters

quote:
A realistic worse-case scenario for Texas
There is a significant chance that Ike will be the worst hurricane to hit Texas in over 40 years. The latest run of the HWRF and GFDL models paint a realistic worst-case scenario for Texas. These models bring Ike to the coast as a Category 4 hurricane (which I give a 20% probability of happening). The HWRF predicts a 170-mile stretch of coast will receive hurricane force winds of 74 mph or greater. A 100-mile stretch of coast will receive winds of Category 3 strength and higher, 115 mph. Hurricane force winds will push inland up to 50 miles, along a 50-mile wide region where the eyewall makes landfall. A 100-mile stretch of Texas coast will receive a storm surge of 10-15 feet, with bays just to the right of where the eye makes landfall receiving a 20-25 foot storm surge. This is what Hurricane Carla of 1961 did to Texas. Carla was a Category 4 hurricane with 145 mph winds at landfall, and drove a 10 foot or higher storm surge to a 180-mile stretch of Texas coast. A maximum storm surge of 22 feet was recorded at Port Lavaca, Texas. Despite the fact that the center of Carla hit over 120 miles southwest of Houston, the hurricane drove a 15-foot storm surge into the bays along the south side of the city.

update?

Basically this could be the worst hurricane to hit Texas since Carla in 1961. Sounds like it could hit the coast as a cat 4 with Houston/Galveston getting the brunt. 15+ foot storm surge and 120mph gusts inland. It would be a serious disaster if that happened.

We're not out of the woods yet but things are looking better for us with every update. My gut says it hits 50 miles or so south of Galveston as a cat 3 and they get clobbered.

looks like we might be ok, hopefully the storm will take it easy on my H-town buddies

I visited some folks in Victoria soon after Carla. I don't think this hurricane is nearly as big as Carla was. This fellow had a wind gauge at his house that blew away after it had reached 150+ MPH. This hurricane appears to have highest sustained winds in the 110 MPH area. Certainly bad enough but Carla was a real monster. This one seems to be more like Dolly.

Storm surge just to the east of the bay will be a lot of the damage. Then again I think most of the West end of Galveston will be washed away as well.

Galveston Bay dodged a huge bullet when the eye tracked right over the bay instead of just west. The surge would've been horrible.

IKE can suck it! Had power back at work since Thursday, but not enough to power the a/c till sat!!! Still no power at home, and enough effing mosquitos to make you mad. It's been 12 days with no power!!!

But you could've gotten a pretty bad pic of Ike damage from Houston itself since I guess she lives there.

And I guess it went over your head but I was poking fun at the idea that misery doesn't count unless it happens in the good 'ole USA.

STB has been pretty boring lately. Someone needs to think of a topic that Strawberry and BBB will get in a fight over. That's always entertaining.
Bad-Ash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Since when did this become a contest over who suffered the worst. Its awful what that hurricane did everywhere, just thought I might let people who don't live here how things are progressing. Things could always be worse, but thanks for reminding me of that since I'm clearly an idiot.
