Howdy. I'm visiting my parents in Edinburg and was thinking about going to South Padre for the day. It has been a while since I've visited and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. It will be me, my sister and my three kids.

Parking vs. driving on the beach....which would be better? Any suggestions on a good area to try?

Do they still have those umbrella rental guys set up? I remember renting one a while back.

there are many options you can take that involve all of those aspects.

first, the most often and the easiest route taken is usually accessing one of the beach access points where they will have vending and parking available, all for a price of course, not much. however you will notice very quickly the crowds of people and some annoying tendencies that may occur. there is no way to predict. these locations are in order from 1 to 6 (major) (7&8 minor or comming soon) and start at the south end of the island. 1 is usually the most busy and is closest to the entrance of the island.

I however like to travel about 8 miles north to beach access 6 where for few dollars you can drive on to the beach and park right infront of the waves. here the experience will be more personal. however it is about 7 miles to the nearest store so make sure you bring everything you need out there because there will be nothing(bathrooms, showers, fresh water, ect).

both beach access points cost the same and actually if you recieve one tag from one you can access any.

if you are looking for an intermediate approach you can park at the many hotels and access the beach using assigned trails that are located along the sides. parking along the road will be free and you will have a good assortment of "extras" around in close range.

Wanna Wanna's near Aries street on the surf side is a great spot. Good bar & grill with chair rentals and a great atmosphere.
