Oldest will be home from college and will need wheels. We're debating how to handle this...standard car rental would be pretty insanely expensive, buy something in decent shape and then turn around and sell it when he goes back to college, other?

Anyone come across this conundrum? How'd you handle it?

Yeah. Buy a cheap car. Sell it in three months.

I don't know if this is a good idea, but aren't there web sites where people are trying to sublease cars? Like a 48 month lease, they have had it for 44 months, and you can just take over the last four.

There are. I looked at that some. Nothing suitable but this will be on the table.

This is my #1 plan. Would bet we'd break even. Obviously be out sales tax but hopefully not much more.

Buy something cool, you drive it and let kid drive yours for the summer. Return to current state after summer.

Or, buy something ok and just keep it around because college is 4-5 years and you don't want to repeat this exercise.

Yeah that was another thought. I'm driving a 10+ year old Audi Q5 but with sub 80k miles. It's great but bound to start breaking down and well out of warranty. Wife suggested going ahead and buying my next car and letting him drive the Audi then maybe deal it at the end of the summer.

How about let him use one of yours when he needs to?

Yeah the plan is for him to get a job and need wheels daily. That doesn't compute when wife and I both work in opposite sides of town and need our cars too.

consider turo, you can get some pretty basic rides on there for a lot less than the major rental companies.

This is the way. Get him one of the ebikes or scooters to go to work and back. He can take one of your cars at night if he has a date or something.

I would say this is an excuse to do the Porsche Drive Subscription for yourself over 3 months, but it looks like they are ending the program on March 31st.

I was half joking about the electric bike. But it is summer, and depending on where you are, it could be an option

We travel to ABQ a lot. You could probably get across town using bike trails quicker on an e-bike than a car

He won't next year. He's at Pitt and it's walkable / bus and he'll be in a dorm again for his sophomore year. One of many reasons he likes it up there.

Buy mine for him now, have a pickup for when you need one, sell in September. Easy peasy.
