The most durable running shoe I've owned is the Mount to Coast S1. Well over 400mi on my pair and the outsole is finally starting to show signs of wear on the outer heel. Not an overly exciting shoe but a great eater of miles.

I always heard that it's bad to walk in running shoes, so as soon as the race/training is done my shoes are off and I'm barefoot or in slides.
Well I'm screwed then. I wear running shoes to work every day.
Yeah, I do too. I also walk quite a bit at work and for a little extra exercise.

I pretty much invariably wear running shoes everywhere now; I am a severe overpronator, even walking, and the stability shoes really help.

My run app told me to replace my shoes yesterday and my posterior tibial tendonitis flared up on the same day. Probably not coincidentally, I am guessing.

I was wondering if there is some suggested conversion between miles walked and miles run when it comes to shoe lifespan. Or if I should just break down and buy two pairs of the same shoe and reserve one of them only for running.

Each time my running shoes reach end of life for running they become my new walking shoes. From what I can tell it doesn't cause any issues.

Had a literal nightmare happen today.

Ran the second half of Beach2Bay in Corpus. Hot and humid as hell. Reached 13.1 miles on my watch and there was no finish line in site. Called my buddy who ran the first leg. Apparently the first half was a mile short, so I got to run an extra mile when I wasn't expecting too.

Might as well make your way over to trail running. We just make up the distances.

Sorry, I should clarify. My comment was intended to be about not wearing my training/racing shoes to walk in. Those shoes are always just training/racing.

But I have some 'running shoes' that I use for just plain old walking around.

Got in to the London marathon via ballot per email received today. Wife is pissed as she didn't make it.

Guess I'm gonna have to start running again.

What are some of y'all's favorite speed workouts when marathon training?

I will say up front that it took me quite a while to figure out what I respond best to from the perspectives of recovery, performance, and injury prevention, but these are staple workouts for me.

Week -4 to 0
  • Hill repeats - .5k up and .5k down done at a moderately hard effort

Week 1 to 5
  • Threshold - same hill repeats as before but ramping up the effort
  • Tempo - 6:00 on / 3:00 off fartlek (5 to 8 repeats)

Week 6 to 11
  • Threshold - 1k (8 to 12) or 1-mile (5 to 8) repeats
  • Tempo - 3 or 4 x 15:00; 2 or 3 x 20:00

Week 12 to 20
  • Threshold - 3 or 4 x 2-mile; 2 or 3 x 3-mile
  • Tempo - 15 to 21k with k's alternating between half marathon and marathon pace (every third week I do this in the middle of my long run rather than a stand-alone workout)

I throw in a track workout (straight 400's or 800's or a ladder) here and there, but that is mainly for the mental benefit of doing something different and just letting it rip.

Need some advice-
Kid just started JH Cross Country and is saying that her big toe is going numb when she is running. I'm going to start with laces and see if they are too tight. But what are some other things that I should be asking her or looking for to troubleshoot?

She is running in Cloudsurfer Trail shoes. I've considered getting a wider toe box shoe for her to try because she does have a wider foot, but want to go through some of the other things before buying another pair.

TIA

Could be a variety of things. A quick trip to the running store would quickly show what it is.

Question. Is she wearing a larger shoe than her normal shoe size? I used to get numbness until I sized up a full size. Now no problems at all.

Edited- we will be in Austin this weekend, what store do you recommend?

Topo has some wider toe box trail shoes.
Altra does too, but zero drop could introduce other problems.
I always go for 2E width shoes if available, and thin socks.

Yeah apparently I've been wearing shoes that were too small my whole life. When I went to a running store, they got me in a pair that is 1.5 sizes larger than my everyday shoes. They've worked well for me.

I don't live in Austin, so not 100% sure. But the Fleet Feet there is a good store with knowledgeable staff and a variety of shoes.

My only other bit of advice (as a former XC dad) is to have more than one pair of running shoes. Those kids run lots of miles and rotating will give the shoes a rest, dry out, etc.

I really like Ready To Run. They have treated me well. They will listen to what you're working on, watch your gait and make recommendations accordingly.

We were in Austin last week and were so excited to visit a Fleet Feet!

The employee barely even greeted us and after several minutes asked if he could help with anything. We were the only people in the store! Sorry we interrupted his snack time (yes, he was eating)...went next door to REI and they were their usual chipper helpful selves. We were disappointed...maybe it was just an off day.

+1 on that location. I was unimpressed when I went in a while back.

I am looking for recommendations for a running belt. The only thing I need to carry is my phone, and I have the regular iPhone and not a max. If there is other utility like carrying gels, etc., then that's fine, but I'm used to carrying those in my pockets.

My biggest thing is that I want it to be as low profile and non-invasive as possible, particularly with any bouncing. I am not worried about money for this and am more focused on the best option.

I like the Flipbelt. I'll run with my phones sometimes and this works great.

Running in Berlin on Sunday. Or rather, going to attempt. Training was going great until I got COVID a few weeks ago. I went from feeling pretty confident to now just wanting to finish. Any advice for a first time marathoner?

Same. I have been trying a few different belts trying to find something to hold my phone without bounce.

I have been looking at the Nathan Zipster belts recently and just pulled the trigger on a Nathan Zipster Lite. It's supposed to be delivered today so no formal review yet, but the reviews online seem overall positive.

Same price range and looks very similar to the Flipbelt linked above. I'm hoping the wide band all the way around lends itself to less bounce.

I have a Nerd Belt and really like a lot.

Little to no bounce from the water when running and the pouch holds an iPhone nicely.

Berlin is a fantastic course. Flat and fast. Try to stick to the tangent line as best as possible. It's the three blue lines running in the middle. Maureen is a great gel? But doesn't have any electrolytes as I found out when I got crazy cramps the last 3 miles.

Get to the expo as early as possible. It's a **** show every year. Look at merch online before you go so you know what you want.

They let you ride the s bahn for free for a certain number of days. They will be like hawks the first day it isn't free anymore lots of people got fines the year I went.

If you haven't already, search Facebook for Berlin marathon groups. Lots of good advice in those.

Have fun and enjoy a doner kebab mit brot for me!

I run pretty much only in fabletics shorts these days. They have built in tights with a sleeve that my phone fits in perfectly. Actually bought a bunch of specialty sized ziplocs off Amazon so the phone itself doesn't get sweaty.

Thanks so much! I live here so I'm pretty amped for the opportunity. I'll be sure to cram some electrolytes over the coming days. It's going to be a little warmer than I'd like (high of 75), and with the later start times I am a little concerned about cramping as well.
