My wife complains about our mattress and it hurts her back. She wants a new one but I don't know where to start. She and I both are stomach sleepers. Is firm better than plush? There are so many options online.

First thing is to quit sleeping on your stomach. Terrible for your back

I would try putting down a foam pad, or a sleeping bag/comforter on the carpet, and try sleeping on that for a few nights. Make sure your pillow ismt too thick either. Or too thin.

I personally prefer firm with just enough softness to avoid pressure points. Works well for my back.

For me firm is better for my chronic low back issues.

Sleep number has been nice bc it is adjustable in firmness. My wife sleeps on a 30 setting where I'm on a 70 (more firm). If you sleep on your stomach put a small pillow where your ankles are like when you're getting a massage or if you can transition to back sleeping, put that pillow under your knees to take pressure off your back.

We just got a Purple Mattress about a month ago, and absolutely love it. There are different firmness levels, so you'd have to go try it out. We came from a Tempurpedic, which I did not love because the memory foam often took 20-30 seconds to settle and hold your position. The Purple simply and immediately holds you in whatever position you are in.

Of course, we also got the adjustable moving bedframe thing, which is cool. Wife loves the Zero-G position when she's reading in bed. However, my favorite thing about the frame is that it has a motion sensor night light underneath, so if / when either of us has to get up in the middle of the night, it lights up the floor without disturbing the person still sleeping.

Purple mattress FTW! Super comfortable and supportive, but not too hard or soft.

Firmer is better for back & stomach sleepers, softer is better for side sleepers.

Finding the right firmness is the hard part. Any change might feel good for a few weeks, but then you might be unhappy again.

I have a sleep number, it's a good choice if you're not sure. You and your wife can adjust the firmness independently from the other. I've had mine for 4 or 5 years now and I'm still very happy with it. I do change the firmness (or should say softness because I have it set like I'm on a marshmallow) from time to time just for a slight change. It's nice to no longer wake up hurting like I did on my old, worn out mattress.
