Perhaps I wasn't clear. you are right, the amount you spend will count towards your spending goal (5k for business) and when you hit the 5k in January, the 70k miles will post.

What I was trying to say, for example, is that if you spent $2132 in November, that amount would count toward the $5k but it would post to your SW in 2019, not 2020, and it wouldn't count for CP in 2020.

Another example:
Assumptions -
Business card is $5k min spend for 70k miles
Personal card is $1k min spend for 40k miles

So let's say you spend all but $100 on each of both the personal and business cards in 2019 (and say they post in 2019) and then finish them off in Jan 2020 by spending the $100 each. You'll get the 110,200 miles (70k+40k+200) In January leaving you 14,800 short. The fact that you spent the $5800 (4900+900) in 2019 and it posted in 2019 means you'll need to make some of that up. If you can do most of the spending in December after the billing cycle starts in, that would help.

Is this a bit clearer? Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks - I understand now. Seems I screwed up and applied too early (today) Should have waited until December to apply so that most of my spending to meet the "1st three months" requirement would be in early 2020 to allow me to double-dip. Now it appears I'm gonna have my work cut out for me to meet the 125k early in 2020 like I wanted, as I won't get the benefit of all our Christmas spending like I thought I would.

Also, when I clicked on the link posted above, the offer still said 80,000 bonus points. No way for me to prove that later since it appears that they have lowered it to 70,000 now, but hopefully they'll honor it.

Chase will usually work with you on this.

You do realize that when you make the spend doesn't matter, it's when the bonus hits. So spend 99% of the spend in 2019 and that 1% on 1/2/20 and you are set. But don't screw this up by putting recurring charges on there or something and having a giant electric bill that puts you over too soon.

I do realize that when I make the spend doesn't matter as long as I am careful to ensure the "final" spend to hit my bonus is in 2020. The bummer for me is that I didn't realize that the $5k I'll spend to get to the bonus will largely fall in 2019 and thus not apply towards my 2020-2021 companion pass (the whole reason I'm getting the card). So I'm essentially going to have to re-spend that $5k to get me to the companion pass.

I don't know your trip schedule, but it's ok if you don't hit it all in January. If you don't get it until March that's still 21 months with a companion pass.

Don't spend thousands or run up interest charges to get your companion a "free" $300 ticket - sounds like you're smart enough not to.

Actually realized that my property taxes will be due at around the time I need to make my spend. That will be an easy transaction that can be immediately paid off.

Quick question. I'm gonna do the chase swa cards to get my companion pass for 2020-2021. That should take care of airfare on a few trips for us. What is the top recommended card for hotel rewards (or VRBO, which we actually prefer when possible?) I can do personal or business card - doesn't matter to me. Just want the most bang for our buck.

I think it all depends on where you travel and which hotel family you use most. I use the AMEX Hilton Honors Surpass card and have been happy for close to 10 years. I'm not using it as much so I may downgrade to the free option, but it's been a great deal. The more you stay at Hiltons the better it is.

If Hilton is the best for you please use my referral link: http://refer.amex.us/CHARLGKeUI?XLINK=MSIR

Truth be told, we try to stay in VRBOs rather than hotels whenever possible, but my Barclay's Arrival card points won't work for VRBO because it codes as "rental property" or "real estate." Sucks because it is a pretty good card otherwise as I get 2 points for every dollar spent

It does matter. Like BSD showed above, if you spent 90% of the limit in 2019, all those spending points go to 2019, not 2020.

Now, absolutely, most people REQUIRE the bonus to hit in the new year to get to that 125k, but for a $5k spend requirement, if you hit $4900 in 2019, that's 4900 points going to 2019, NOT 2020. So that's $4900 more you'll have to spend in 2020 to hit that 125k.

I find it's best to apply for the card in say Oct/Nov 2019, but then really start spending during the first cycle that will close in 2020. By getting it in oct/nov, first off, you'll know you'll get the card, but also you'll know the cycle dates, so you can time it perfectly. This way, you get bonus, plus the majority of the 5k spend requirement. Why put 4k+ points towards 2019?

So essentially, I wait for the December statement to close and then do my $5k spend any time after that and before the 90 day mark (ie - before mid-january). As long as my spend starts after the December statement closing date, all the points hit my acct for 2020?

The plan is to put my property taxes on the card. They are a bit over $10k so essentially I can find another card with a great SUB and even if it has a $5k spend requirement, I can meet both cards' requirements with my taxes alone.

Correct. wait until a new statement starts in dec and then start spending. That state will close in jan and you get the 5k spending points plus bonus.

Main reason why I like to get it early Nov; I get one statement so I know when the cycle ends. If you applied for a card say on Dec. 1., there is no guarantee that the first statement will close in Jan.. You never really know what they are gonna do for that first cycle.. Every company/card is different I'm sure.

Are you paying a fee to pay prop taxes on card? I've never heard of a CC option for prop tax.. not free anyway.

Actually, I've never done it yet. Saw some discussion on the reddit churning thread about paying property tax with a card to meet spend requirements, so I assumed it was an option. With my luck, it won't be an option for my taxing entity.

My taxing authorities charge about 3% for a credit card payment. Otherwise it would be perfect.

Just checked and my fee to use the cc for taxes would be $188. Probably worth it to get my entire $5k spend done in january and get my SWA CP rather than scrambling to make organic spends in that amount.

Probably? Seems easy enough to calculate:
How many flights do you have planned in Jan/Feb that would use the CP?

Figure that out, then see if those CP flights are worth more than $188. If not, then there is no sense in paying the fee for the 'free' flight.
OldAg92

I have no flights planned in January/February. The issue isn't getting a free flight during those two months, the issue is getting to a $5k spend by mid-January to earn the bonus (and companion pass for 2020-2021). Property taxes would do that for me. I don't think I have any other spending that would even come close - I'd be loading most of my $5k in November and December (Christmas shopping, etc) and then won't get the benefit of those points towards the 2020-2021 CP.

If Most of your $5k Is loaded in December, it doesn't sound like it leaves much left to hit the $5k in Jan. Not sure why you'd need another $5k in prop tax to do it. Why not just pay maybe one <$1000 prop tax bill with card? That's just a $30 fee.

Remember, You have all year to hit 125k.. not just during the bonus spend period. Get the bonus in Jan while spending bare minimum on 'fees' if any at all.. then just use the card Daily. If you get CP in April, may, etc. you still have 18 months to use CP. if you have no flights planned early part of year, who cares if you don't get CP in Jan or feb.

Sorry - I wasn't real clear in my explanation. What I was hoping to accomplish was to use the $5k (or as much of it as possible) towards my 125k needed for the CP, and I originally thought that December Christmas spending would count. Once I realized that CP points reset in January, I figured I'd get the most bamg for my buck by trying to do as much of the $5k minimum spend as possible in early Jamuary. With that short of a fuse, I needed a large transaction, and that is where property taxes came in.

But you are right that I don't need the CP that early....just was hoping to double-dip my minimum required spend and allocate it towards the CP as well.

Just depends when your December statement date is and how early you a Christmas shop. If you get a statement on say December 6, you're free to spend because the points from future purchases won't hit until your January statement close date.

That's a good point - just got approved for the card so when it comes in, I can figure out what my statement closing date is and possibly get the benefit of some Christmas spending.

Just make sure you don't do what I did and forget what minimum spend is. I thought it was 3k, but it was 1, so I got my bonus last December when I was shooting for January. I'd also try to be safe and wait til you get the statement in before going hog wild, I've seen them be a day or two off before.

I called and I asked for:
statement closing date
payment due date
confirmed my bonus was 80k points (I applied when it was still offered, but was approved after it was expired)
confirmed required spending for bonus was $5k (not $3k then $2k or anything...)
asked last day to spend that would count towards $5k

Since it's a business card I also had to get a Chase business login since it't not linked with my personal cards.

I was approved mid-October, but I have until January 30 to meet the $5k spending. Like others I'm paranoid about when the bonus hits

It hits immediately at the close of the cycle that breaches the min. spend. They say it can take 30 days or whatever, but every chase card I've had (about 5 now), when the cycle closes (the one in which I hit min. spend), it posts that day or the next day.

I would absolutely NOT hit your spend in a cycle that ends in Dec.. even if it's Dec 31.

To be extra safe, you could even make sure you hit min. spend in the new year, so if they decide to send that bonus right away (even before that cycle closes), you'll still be good.

I'm posting so this thread will stay in my watchlist, it keeps disappearing for some reason.

Also...

MAKE SURE YOU JUST PUT YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME WHEN APPLYING FOR A CIP WITH YOUR SSN.

I screwed this up and am now waiting 30 days for the app to clear and try again.

For CIP, you are also better of going with your home address. Especially if you are going with SSN and Sole Prop

NVM - went ahead and got the Sapphire Reserve.

I'll keep my Amazon card for the 5x on Amazon purchases and use the Reserve for everything else.

I did find that Chase lets you transfer points in the whatever way gives you the most value so I SHOULD be able to transfer my Amazon points to the UR program. We'll see how it goes.

Chase Biz cards are the way to go. I know a lot of people already know this, but it just clicked for me today. They don't count towards 5/24, and you can even go down the rabbit hole of getting EIN numbers to apply for them.

My wife and I use Hyatt and Southwest for our travel and both transfer as long as you have the CIP.

Finishing up my SWA rapids reward strategy and had a quick question. I already applied for (and received) my SWA Rapid Rewards Business Preferred card. The other two cards I am interested in are the SWA Rapid Rewards personal card (to get my 40k additional SUB and earn my companion pass for 2020-2021) and then the Business Ink card for the 80k UR SUB. I want to be careful not to end up on Chase's radar from a velocity standpoint. I have only opened the one SWA business card in the past 24 months, so 5/24 isn't a problem.

If I just opened my SWA business card in early October, should I be ok applying for the SWA personal card already, or should I wait a bit? And when should it be safe to apply for the ink card?

Finally, I recently refinanced my mortgage and found out yesterday that Chase took over the servicing of the mortgage effective Dec 1. Any chance I can call Chase and leverage that mortgage into some points? I know they sometimes do UR SUB points for new mortgages where Chase is the original lender, but I wonder if I could talk them into some points in this scenario as well.

Thanks in advance for any info you can share,

I'm in your same position. I decided I'm going to apply for the personal card the first half of December. I don't want to hit the minimum spend for bonus before then anyways. I figure I have to in order to maximize the time with the companion pass

Sadly, no you won't. The biz cards seem to be the current loop hole though. If you are under 5/24 you can start self referring using a SSN for one and an EIN for the other.
