Thinking of going to Iceland off season. Any recs on things to do and places to see around Reykjavik including food and hotel recs. Thanks! I know during the winter it's best to be careful as to the driving.

The Ring Road should be fine in terms of driving, just look out for the wind. Not many recs for Reykjavik because I usually don't spend too much time there. The Golden Circle route should be well open too.

Take a trip to the Faroes. Love the island chain with very few visitors

I didn't even think about those islands. I've heard in Reykavik there are some great thermal pools. The golden circle sounds nice but if winter and high winds set in I may take an excursion.

We did a humpback whale watching tour out of Reykjavik that we loved.

Also really loved this place for dinner: Sumac Grill

What a Texags response.

"What do I do in Reykjavik?"
"Take a 2 hour flight to somewhere else"

Place looks amazing. Love the menu (though I don't have Iceland krona figured out). Thanks.

Get ready for once you have the krona math sorted, mercy is it expensive.

I'm thinking of getting a city card. Supposed to be a good deal to get into museums and thermal/swimming pools.

Saw that. Wonder whether air bnb makes more sense than hotel?

Personally, I would skip Blue Lagoon. There are better hot springs around the island that are far less expensive.

If you are a beer drinker, the Einstock tap room in downtown Reyk is great. But Gaedingur is way better. It's just a bit out of the way.

When I go to Iceland, I just use the pay and pray method with krona...pay now and pray when you get your credit card bill!

I like that method! Thanks.

Will second Sumac Grill.

Not sure if it's still open but there was a small restaurant across the street from Hallgrmskirkja that had a grass roof. Employed by all tall blond Viking looking goddesses. I recall the food being good as well but i may be conflating that with the scenery.

They are getting very rainy and windy weather now. Guess you can never guarantee the weather in Iceland. Thanks for the recs

I wonder what November is like? I guess the days being shorter creates a new challenge besides the weather.

On any day, cold, warm, sunny, cloudy, maybe rain/snow. Biggest difference is November you won't have to worry about the flies.

Avoiding flies is always great!

How did you all make your way to Iceland? When I go I am thinking of flying to Boston and then using Icelandair from there. Seems to have a daily flight at noon and gets in at 9. Avoid jet lag

When we went back in 2018, we flew to BOS and did 2 nights in BOS on the front end of the trip just to break it up. Then flew WOW Air to Iceland. Unfortunately, they went under because air fares were cheap on them.

That's interesting. Most flights arrive in the morning there so you would definitely beat the rush. Just make sure you have arranged a ride into Reykjavik, is about a 90-minute ride from the airport in Keflavik.

Iceland is a driving trip. I assume he's renting a car. That's what we did.

When I went, I booked a flight with Icelandair because they let you do the free Iceland layover (awesome perk, btw!). Even though the entire trip earned Icelandair ff miles, the Houston to Boston portion was on JetBlue, and that was a great flight! I wish we had more opportunities to use them out of IAH.

We are going via boston..united and then icelandair. Our noon to 9 p.m. flight tho already was cancelled so we will take the night flight and get in at 6 a.m. I guess I will save a night's hotel in Reykjavik.
