Christmas is right around the corner, so I think I'll have Mrs Claus hook me up.

I don't think I need a $400 Bushnell, but wondered if anyone has tried out the Acer or other economical brands?

I just want quick distances, slope feature would be nice, and for it to be magnetized.

The IPS version of this range finder is what I've been using for about 3 years. I had a Leupold before it. Comparable.

(I paid much less than that $269 price though.)

I have an alternative thought. I have had a Bushnell for years, slope etc and I used it dutifully. Recently I read an article about 10 things you need to do get better at golf. #1 on that list was track your shots. Recently I purchased Shot Scope and began tracking my shots. On approach I have found that I've been really focusing on the green metrics, carry, fat part of the green etc. It shouldn't be surprise but it still is to me, my GIR jumped up quite a bit. I don't even shoot the pin anymore. So, to answer your query…maybe consider that alternative. It's less expensive as well.

I carry both Shot Scope for GPS/shot tracking and a rangefinder. I shoot the pin occasionally, but most of the time I use the rangefinder to shoot specific obstacles or hazards. e.g., how far is it to that tree on the far side of the dogleg so I know how much landing room I have? How far to the opposite water hazard bank so I know what my minimum carry can be? A rangefinder is still very valuable for random situations where a distance is helpful, but your GPS can't give it to you.

Very true and I do use mine for that occasionally. However, I am guessing (purely guessing) people use them 80% of the time or more to shoot the pin. I am just offering an alternative thought. Best solution is to have both of them I suppose.

Agreed. I almost never see anyone else I play with use their rangefinder for anything other than shooting the pin. It's weird, almost as if it never occurred to them that you can get distances to anything else.

Does anyone have any recommendations for cheaper ones for Christmas? One suited for a 10 year old.

I've got a higher end Bushnell and a mid range Blue Tees. Can't tell any real difference between them.

A Blue Tees should be fine.

This is not a recommendation above other brands, just my real life experience. I had the Gogogo for several years and it was just fine. I checked it several times against expensive models that my brother and other people had and it was always within a yard or two. It took maybe a half second longer to lock the pin. Maybe. It worked great. Finally lost it. Hit into a no carts area, carried it with me. Shot the distance, set it down, hit the shot and walked off and left it. Now that it is gone, I am strongly considering buying another, but I am watching this thread for other ideas.

I've bought several on www.shopgoodwill.com

Just looked and there's a couple of bushnell ones on there. I usually pay $20 - 40 for them.

Search on rangefinder and sort thru all the camera stuff.

I got the Gogogo Sport Vpro ZeroIn rangefinder off Amazon a year ago.

Its $100. I can't imagine needing anything more expensive than that. I long held off on moving away from Bushnell my golf watch to a rangefinder because I have shaky hands have had trouble with some rangefinders locking onto the pin.

Not this one. No issue at all. Battery life is excellent too

I use a Precision Pro Titan Elite. Is is fantastic. Great features that includes an app on your phone to show you the hole. It uses GPS to give you accurate distances to carry bunkers, etc. another great feature is it is rechargeable. Each charge last for 100 rounds. Never have to buy a battery again. If you accidentally leave it somewhere, it will give you a phone alert, and give you it's own location. Cost is $350. Well worth it.

i bought tiger and they do really well. I tend to lose my range finder twice a year forgetting it on the course so have bought the 30-40 brands which seems to work well.

Is there really a difference between these 30-40 brand and the 2-300 brands? I could not imagine the technology being that advance to matter much.

I bought the bushnell pro 1600 back in 2012 and honestly I still like it better than all the newer brand name ones. It's big, has no magnet but it works flawlessly. If I were to lose it, I'd just find another used one on eBay for cheap.

Caddy Tek from Costco, they have a newer version out now, I think V3. Many on this board have recommended the older version when it used to go on sale for $99.

https://caddytek.com/products/caddytek-golf-laser-rangefinder-with-slope-and-pin-validation-functions

Try googling "Costco Caddy Tek" range finder. You can find the v2 version on ebay quite cheap. I own two of them, never an issue and same distance as the expensive models when compared.

Edit to add that it is $139 on the Costco website, solid rangefinder.

I'm done with expensive range finders. Found the Callaway 300 and it works great. Has slope, etc. You can find many range finders on ebay for a good discount. I believe the guys who clean out carts find them and throw them online to make a buck.

For a 10 yr old - a Bushnell Phantom or Blue Tees equivalent.

Phantom is small. Gives front, middle and back. Distance to hazards.

Carry in his pocket and all the info he needs.
