Howdy. Husband is set to retire after 27 years being an AMT in USCG. He is considering post-retirement work and I was hoping to get ideas and suggestions from anyone who's been there.

He's an AMTC but wants nothing to do with helicopters when he's out. He's unsure if he wants to be responsible for anyone's health or life. Also unsure if he wants to do full-time or part-time, be a boss or have limited responsibility, and more. He's somewhat of a social butterfly but he can focus on work. He's had lots of leadership and training experience, some special assignments, etc. We live in League City and are wanting to stay in Montgomery, Harris, or Galveston County when he retires.

That said, any suggestions of what he might want to look into for a post-retirement career. Something other than working at Lowe's. (No offense to Lowe's but he'll blow all of his paycheck and more with the free time he'll have LOL).

Let me know if there's any other info that might be good to help make suggestions.

The career link at the bottom of BankofAmerica dot com is very extensive and easy to narrow down as to location. Their base salary for any employee is $23/hour and benefits are immediate.

A. Sales. Not cars or mobile homes, but sales in businesses adjacent to his experience in the military. Sales can be very rewarding and is all about building relationships and solving problems.

B. Business continuity. Tell him to look up the DRI Veteran Outreach Program. There are lots of opportunities in BC, and the mentors with the VOP will get him trained, certified, and networked.

If he's an A&P, he can work full or part-time, with as much or as little work, whenever & wherever he wants. There's a huge shortage for A&P's in the general aviation world. No social skills needed…..just a willing soul & sign on the door.

Depending on how far away from helicopters he truly wants to be, both PHI and Bristow have bases in Galveston. He doesn't necessarily have to be an A&P, he would be a good candidate for a program manager, scheduling manager, etc. I could give you a little bit of insight on what those job openings will be in 2026 if you're curious. Both companies are paying around $125 starting (including bonuses) for A&Ps right now though if he isn't sold on leaving aircraft maintenance

Otherwise, what are his other hard skills? Very few civilian openings will care about things like leadership except as a differentiator between two candidates with identical hard skills. Does the Cost Guard do Skillbridge programs? I have a few contacts in placement companies like Five and Fly, but I don't know what roles they're filling right now.

Teaching? There is a pretty easy Troops to Teachers program. Govt contracting? There are always thousands of roles in L3Harris, Northrop, etc both remote and between Galveston and Lake Charles
