Don't sleep on Spanish wines (Rioja). There are some very good wines from there that retail at a fraction of a Napa cab.

Maybe not as bold, but if you like tempranillo, Riojas can be a treat. Especially a gran reserva.

Any specific recommendations?
We were thinking of doing a "Tapas and Tempranillo" night for our HOA but I don't have a ton of experience with Spanish wines. 4-5 different ones would be the plan across some varying price points if you have any recs!

I'm a big fan of Riojas. Lots of good value in the region. Without getting into too many details, there are crianza, reserva, and gran reserva wines. Crianza are aged less, priced lower, and tend to be meant to be enjoyed young. Reserva is aged more, and typically priced more. Gran Reserva is meant for aging and typically the most expensive.

Some quality producers that you should be able to find at Total Wine/Specs include Muga, La Rioja Alta, Cune (includes Vina Real, Imperial, and Contino labels), Marques de Riscal, Marques de Murrieta, Roda, and Lopez de Heredia. Most of these producers have wines at multiple price points depending on crianza vs gran reserva, etc. So you should be able to find 4-5 to try at a range of prices.

Three of my favorite producers are Contino, Remelluri, and Miguel Merino. Contino and Remelluri can be found at various specialty wine shops and occasionally total wine. Miguel Merino is hard to source, but it was my favorite winery when we visited a few years back.

Artadi is another very high quality producer. Hope this helps.

From Chat:

Here's a practical, drink-ready right now list of Spanish Tempranillo wines that deliver excellent quality-for-price (QPR) focusing on bottles you can typically find for reasonable prices (generally under about ~$40) and that are approachable without long aging. Spanish Tempranillo is one of the best expressions of value in red wine anywhere, especially from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
Top 5 Tempranillo Wines QPR & Ready Now
[ol]
  • La Rioja Alta ViƱa Alberdi Reserva (Rioja) Elegant, classic Rioja with balanced fruit, spice and oak; approachable now yet great value for its reserve style. Typically under ~$30-$35.
  • Marques de Caceres Rioja Crianza (Rioja) One of the most consistently good budget Crianza Tempranillos: smooth red fruit with gentle oak and spice, great with food, widely available.
  • Valserrano Rioja Crianza (Rioja) Another excellent Crianza with rich berry flavors, subtle vanilla and herbal notes offers a lot of depth for its price point (~$18-$22).
  • Pico Cuadro Original (Ribera del Duero) From a top Ribera producer; vibrant fruit and firm structure make this a great value red from the region where Tempranillo is king. Typically ~ ~$20.
  • San Gregorio El Vergal Tempranillo (Various regions) A fruity, juicy, lighter-bodied Tempranillo that punches above its price class great for everyday drinking ~ ~$12-$15.
  • [/ol]

Notes on Styles & Ready-Now Drinkability
    • Crianza vs Reserva: Crianza wines are usually aged ~1 year in barrel and ~1 year in bottle; they hit shelves ready to drink sooner with fresh fruit and gentle oak. Reserva sees longer aging, offering more complexity but still quite approachable if already released.
    • Bottles above ~$25$30 from Rioja or Ribera (e.g., Contino Reserva or La Rioja Alta Ardanza) are also excellent value if you want a step up from the basic list, though they're less budget-friendly.

Not to put to fine a point on it but there's also Joven that's even younger than Crianza.

A couple of other good Spanish producers are LAN and Bodegas Bilbainas.

You can spend a lot of money on a Rioja but it's typically something unique. Even good gran reservas are usually in the $40-$60 range.

That sounds awesome but I've already committed to La Fete in NYC in October, and I'm not sure I can convince my wife to make two trips for wine purposes.

I bought 6 of these, and the 2-3 I drank previously were kind of meh. This one is great though!

Why are they meh? I've seen them a few times on last bottle but never pulled the trigger.

They were kind of one note - lots of tannin and not much fruit, and no length. Not this bottle though. It's been a few years at least since I opened one, I wish I'd saved more of them. I think it clearly just needed more time.

Brought these back from St Emilion several years ago and opened them last night. I prefer the earthy tones of the Gaudet whereas my wife liked the fruiter and brighter Soutard.

Does anyone know if AOC Selections in Houston is open in-person purchases or just pickup of online purchases? The selection looks phenomenal, but it's a bit overwhelming. I'd love to just go in and look around.

Yes you can go to AOC in person. they have a nice selection of wines but online has way more than in store.
