I can't respect anyone that has a degree from Texas A&M and puts garbage ass red beans in their chili like a left coast Neanderthal.

Am I being too harsh? Or was I just raised right?

I was all about this debate until a poster on TA said his family was poor, so they added beans to make the food go further. Now I mind my own business on certain food discussions.

I put beans in my chili and I couldn't give two s**** about your respect. I really hope that was as cathartic as you had hoped.

If it tastes good, I'm all for it. I don't care if it's considered proper.

Any chili I make does not have beans in it. I have eaten chili with beans many times if others have made it and chose to put beans in theirs. My grandmother, who grew up during the depression, made chili without beans,,,,,,,,, but she would also make a pot of beans separately and told everyone they could add beans to their bowl if they would like to.

Your grandmother was a wise woman. Been doing that for years. Them that want beans in their chili can add them.....them that don't can sit there and P&M about those that do because they can't accept the fact that some people like beans in their chili...... OP prolly makes his chili out of hamburger meat ....and puts 2 cans of Rotel in it....

Red beans in chili is garbage.

Pinto beans are the way to go.

(I'm one of the people who grew up poor, pinto beans were part of every meal.)

I don't like beans in Chili, but I don't get so pissed off that I need to start a thread about it.

No beans in chili, no chili in beans. Two separate dishes which my be mixed if someone wishes but then you are eating a new dish called chilibeans.

I like all three dishes but chili has no beans, only chili. No tomato products in chili either. Their good in beans but not chili.

I am the oldest of 6, not including the various foster kids.
Beans in chili damn sure meant everyone could eat until they are full.

Now though, my dad doesn't add them. But he never complains when I make chili when he visits in winter.

Personally, I think people *****ing about beans in chili is like me *****ing about bacon in everything.

It is an eye roll for most people

Texas Chili Parlor has several chilis on menu with beans. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

I put beans in my chili, both red and black. Zero. ****s. Given.

I also make mine with the smoked brisket flat and smoked pulled pork. It's the BEST **** EVER.

It was years of making chili before I got my smoker, and I chopped up leftovers, and I've never made a better pot. With beans.

Suck my ass.

Here's some stuff for the no beans in chili piler oners .......ever tried chicken chili ?

aasn ......for the red bean haters ....the big ones are horrible but the little ones cooked up cajun style are PDG. Also while not a fan of canned anything the HEB brand charro beans make pretty good refried's but only if you use LARD to refry them in

At least 2 days a week, my first job after getting home from middle school was to make sure there was water in the beans and they didn't burn. You burn the beans and ruin dinner, mama was not happy.

Growing up in South Texas, we put beans in our chili. It's a more complete meal and gives it some additional texture. Makes it more interesting. Pro beans.

Chili is for putting leftovers and whatever the hell you want in it. I grew up where we had beans in our chili so We usually do that too. Black, pinto, red… any of them are fine. I find Texas Chili elitism so weird because Texas chili isn't even all that.
ValleyRatAg

Not chili elitism but chili purism.

Something you throw whatever you got in the fridge in is a jambalaya or stew depending which way you go with it. You can have a chili flavored stew.

Chili is a dish that is its own. A base. It consists of meat, dried peppers, salt, water, and spices. Very simple base dish. When you get outside of that you begin making a chili based stew.

I'm from south Texas as well and there wasn't any beans in the chili as a standard.

We used to mix our beans and chili to make chili beans as a separate meal and stretch the leftovers.

If yall chili "purists" want to be exact in your chili purism you should let the beef you use in said chili set out until it becomes half spoiled and rancid ......that's what they used originally in the way back when.....all the spices and chili powder were to help semi cover up the taste of the near rotten meat .....just saying

I make mine w/out but if it tastes good I don't care what someone else does when I get a free meal.

Having said that - this thread is misguided. People in Cincinnati have no seat at any table that claims to make chili.
Staff - take out the trash.

Everyone's about to start yelling at me, but being from SE Texas, we served our chili over rice. Sometimes with beans and sometimes without, but always with rice (and sometimes with Fritos), cheese, onions, and sour cream were always on the table as well.

If I'm in a cook off, I don't add beans, but for eating at home, we usually add them in because that's what I'm used to and I like it that way.

I go both ways when it comes to beans in chili. If I'm making it to go over cheese enchiladas, for frito pie, or a hot dog topping, no beans. But when I add beans, I usually use cranberry beans. They're a little bigger than a pinto and hold up better.

I don't put beans in my chili, but I can live with pintos if someone serves it to me. Black or kidney, no thanks. What also gets lost in the bean discussion is the volume of beans. If a few are scattered in there, no big deal. Easy to cross into bean soup territory with too many

User name doesn't check out. I'd always heard chuckwagon cooks used beans in about everything. They preserved well for a long cattle drive or roundup, and they were filling. I've always liked a few pintos in mine.
