What a bummer to hear the news. I was a regular at LM's in Taylor when his dad was giving everyone a hard time for ordering the wrong way, and John was the runner slinging out sides. I visited all of his subsequent locations in Austin, always supporting and hoping for the best.

Really enjoyed his great bbq and even enjoyed his crotchety attitude. He really enjoyed giving my college buddy hell about something new every time he showed up.

I ordered a smoked brisket and bone in ham from him around Christmas every year there for a while. The year that Black Box BBQ location closed he just had me meet him at that location to pick it up. He was parked in his son's car with a bunch of brisket and other things stored in the back.

He said that at any point he expected the Georgetown police to come arrest him because he looked like a meth dealer selling out of the trunk of that beat up old car.

Reading between the lines in an article and from what his sister said, it sounds like it wasn't natural causes. I hope he's found some peace.

John was a difficult and troubled individual, but he was also amazingly gifted and at times had a huge heart. I ate his bbq at several of the locations over the years, but i recall once at the J Mueller location in East Austin, my family showed up after he was "sold out". However, when he saw my hungry young children he "found" some smoked pork and sausage and brought it over to our family and just gave it to us.

While he was rough around the edges, i think a lot of the surliness was played up as a character.

I hope he found Jesus before his untimely end. I'm going to miss never getting his brisket again.

Aint no article about it. Anyone who spent any time around the man could see his demons. Great cook, one of the best, but guy had demons.
