Went through this myself. As a broke ass sophomore I found a deal for dollar a pound ground turkey. Got a 100lbs. Still one of the better investments I made but I quickly gave up trying to make anything with formed meat.

Just do taco meat with a lot of seasoning and call it a day is my rec. Easy, cheap, edible.

The only way I got them to taste decent was to cook on a pit. At least charcoal, get some smoke on them. Gas grill sucks and pan fry sucks.

We make ground turkey tacos at least twice a month. Brown it and throw a bunch of Fiesta taco seasoning in there with some water and let it cook down until the water is gone. Crispy shells, shredded Mexican blend cheese, plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, sliced avacado, pico, shredded lettuce, hot sauce of your choice. Pretty good, cheap, and relatively healthy. My wife forgoes the shells and makes a taco salad. Open a can of black beans.

Our kids love them.

To give more flavor, We saute red onion, Serrano, and bacon first, let cool, and incorporate into the patties. Instead of grilling, I do them on a griddle or could do cast iron on grill.

I've made smash burgers with turkey before. After you add condiments and cheese you can't really taste the turkey meat...

Does it have to be turkey burgers?
We eat ground turkey a lot in my house. Recipe I just made up from ingredients we had on hand this past week that wife, 16 y/o and I really enjoyed. used my 14" non-stick frying pan and 9"x11" baking dish

4 zucchinis spiralized (zoodles)
1# ground 93% ground turkey
1# sliced baby bella mushrooms
About 4 cups homemade marinara (could use a big jar of Rao's or similar)
about 1/2 brick of cream cheese (I dont know the ozs)
about a 1/2 small tub of blue cheese crumbles.

We sauted the zoodles a few minuets to get rid of a bunch of moisture, salt and pepper to taste, then added to the 9x11.
stirred in about half the marinara and tucked in the cream cheese in pinches.
browned the turkey meat and mushrooms together till it was cooked through, mushrooms soft. salt and pepper to taste.
sprinkled the turkey/shroom mix on top of the zoodles
covered the dish with last half of marina
sprinkled blue cheese crumbles on top.
then into 375 oven, uncovered about 30 minutes.

My Sophomore and Junior year, I was so broke I couldn't afford to get lunch before going to work. I would eat a bag of popcorn for lunch. Senior year, I upped the amount of hours I worked (which somehow made me a better student), and then could afford to buy meat packages from a butcher shop in Bryan.

I felt like a king.

If it has to be Turkey burgers, I like them on a toasted bun with fresh avocado mashed into a spread on the bun like mayo. Or maybe use siracha mayo.
Gotta spice those up.

I would defrost them and make sloppy Joe's out of them.

i'd rather eat a raw turkey burger with no spices than a sloppy joe.

I appreciate the alternate suggestions, but wife already did the grocery shopping for the planned meals, so "burgers" are it.
Making smashed burgers out of turkey definitely isn't the same as beef, but seared in butter with a slice of cheese is not a bad way to eat a turkey burger when you have to.

When you smash, make sure you use parchment in between the spatula and the meat, otherwise, the meat sticks to the spatula.

So to sum this up - use protection when you smash?

I just add more to them than I would normally for burgers. I'll add an egg, mustard, worcestershire, bread crumbs, and then seasonings, for example. I also cook them on a skillet instead of a grill. I've found they stay together better and being able to use the lid helps cook the inside and not dry them out.

I mean I'm not going to put them up for any kind of award and I'd rather have a real burger 10/10 times. But they are still good, IMO.
I feel much the same htxag. They can be pretty darn good if you throw in the egg, mustard, and Worcestershire and all the crumbs and seasoning are the icing on the cake. I definitely wouldn't throw them out.

Ok. I found some at the bottom of the freezer. Tried the gasser again. This time I did liquid smoke. A lot. Garlic powder and pepper one side, toneys on the other. Not bad. Cooked 4. I had 1 shared the other 3 with the 2 dogs. Just because nobody else was going to eat them. Now the beef is on.

Bro, you may be picky, but it's the kind of picky that makes some people choose McDonalds over Burger King. Most store bought Italian Sausage ain't that great much less than when you make it out of Turkey

We buy it then cut it out of the casing, don't knock it til you try it. Fit for a dog, right Fido

Nope, in round rock.

Turkey "burgers" were edible. Did minced garlic, onion powder, cayenne, paprika, Worcester sauce, salt, pepper, egg, and bread crumbs.

Don't make turkey burgers.

And have a discussion with her about buying food that you don't like and then not eating it.

That is Round Rock. Where do you run at for technical training. I had Dana's Peak and Miller Crossing in Belton and Killeen but now trying to figure out the area.

I thought brush creek mud was cedar park. Anyway, I'm over by terravista. Plenty of technical trail at Brushy, especially 1/4 notch (deception). For technical and climbing, I head to HoL, or closer is the hill on the back side of Georgetown lake dam, plus plenty of other technical running out there. With young kids at home, I tend to run closer to home, so I'm on suburban ninja a lot, but its not overly technical except a few sections.

I was broke as hell. It was a shady "bought this food with food stamps and resell cheap to buy weed" sorta arrangement.

And it took two payments on my end. It was an all or nothing thing.

NGL though, I wouldn't mind having that opportunity again now. Turkey will never compare to beef but when you are just cooking for yourself and trying to stay alive in school...it has its uses.

That's some ghetto shiitttt.

I was gonna say, if you had $100 as a student, you weren't broke, but two payments? Maybe you were.

When I make turkey burgers they usually come out tasting better than normal burgers which surprises me everytime. I always figure they'll turn out super dry but they always turn out very moist and juicy. I open the 1 lb of ground turkey meat, add an egg, some bread crumbs, some seasoning and mix it all up. Divide the meat mixture into 4. Form them into patties. Stick onto a skillet that is on medium high heat that has melted butter on it. They turn out dang good.

I know, I know.... It sounds wild but they're freakin good. I can just sit there and eat a couple patties by themselves.

Because there's always one.
