We basically buy only the HEB Original Restaurant style tortilla chips. The Mrs. strongly prefers them and I think they are quite good as well. But, I'm open to mixing it up occasionally.

I just came across a Serious Eats comparison and Tostitos came in first and second place. I can't remember the last time I had that brand, but i certainly don't recall it being a life-changing experience. I kind of always thought of Tostitos as what you would buy in Iowa or Massachusetts, where there weren't any other options.

What is your or your family's favorite tortilla chips?

We buy Calidad. If I had an HEB I'd buy their brand.

Santita's was good, but got too expensive. And my gut feeling is that the bag is getting smaller.

Julio's Original chips have a nice bite to them. Available at HEB, among other retailers.

If we are talking store bought readily available

Snacking out of the bag, central market hatch tortilla chips. (Not to be confused with the hatch waffle fry chips that are the second best chip next to the Utz crab chip.)

Salsa, EL MILAGRO MEXICAN KITCHEN STYLE TORTILLA

This. This is the truth. I was an HEB store made chip guy before I had these. I'll never go back.

I typically buy the Mission brand white corn tortillas and cut them into 6 triangles before frying in peanut oil. Sprinkle with fine sea salt after they are crisp. The HEB brand and Guerrero brand have a tendency to puff up when frying.

Chips are probably my #1 most requested "will you bring" item when we get invited to friends.

Was going to say Julios. Love them. The freaking hot have on occasion made me dizzy from their heat.

I like Julio's but the seasoning hurts my teeth for some reason. Never had that with any other food.

I am probably the odd one here but I strongly prefer a thicker chip, my preferences

1. Make my own, set corn tortillas out on the counter overnight to let them dry up, next day cut into quarters and fry
2. Go to a mexican markets (like La Michoacana)and buy them, they usually sell themas "totopos"
3. If I must HEB restaurant style unsalted

I have not tried any of the other brands posted here but I will now just to try them, oh and just my opinion but tostitos suck. Not a huge fan of the super thin ones served at many restaurants.

The HEB chips used to be my favorite. They were thick, but not too thick, and were great with guacamole or salsa. They're thinner now, and not as good. Julio's is now my favorite, probably because they have MSG.

Julio's, or there is a brand out of FW called Cardona that is great. It's a similar kind of chip as Julio's, a little thicker and puffier with good flavor. We buy them at CM, I'm sure they sell them at HEB.
