Momentum! The Aggies are coming off their best win of the early season with a dominant annihilation of Florida State 95-59. Now it's time for another ACC foe in the ACC-SEC Challenge as we hit the road yet again to take on Pitt tonight at 6pm on ESPNU.
After some stumbles against our first power 4 opponents, the Ags traveled to Tampa and put on a Bucky Ball showcase on a national stage. Three's we're flying, the ball was moving, off ball movement was spectacular, defense was turned up a notch, we created many turnovers, we rebounded well (Agee), and we played fast, fast, fast.
Fast is the key. Like others have mentioned, Pitt plays at a much slower pace. They want to get in the half court, they want to kill the shot clock and have good quality possessions. They've only scored more than 80 once and it was against Bucknell. It will be a schematic philosophical battle tonight that I'm excited to see. Do they make us go slow or do we make them go fast.
Pitt is lead by its center #2 Cameron Corhen who averages 14.8 points and 9.6 rebounds. They have 3 other players in double figures. However, they only play about 7 guys quality minutes and only one other more than 7 minutes. We'll see how their minutes play out against us or if fatigue will play a factor. Corhen stands at 6'10 and they have another big who plays a lot less that backs him up who stands at 7'0. They only played 7 guys against Ohio State with Corhen playing 39 minutes.
They are currently standing at 5-3. They opened their season with wins over Providence, Pitt-Johnstown, Youngstown State, Longwood, and Eastern Michigan. They then lost by 22 in a rivalry game to West Virginia, before beating Bucknell. They then lost to a common opponent in UCF before enduring an embarrassing loss to Quinnipiac. They would bounce back and beat Ohio State. We'll see if they can carry that momentum.
I'm curious to see how fast we can play and if we can turn this game into a track meet. I think we'll need too. Although our half court offense and defense is getting better, we still play better fast and causing havoc. Dominguez is coming some stellar performances, Agee is coming off a 17 and 17 game, Mgbako is coming into his own, Isaacs was playing some great ball from the point guard position, Holloway is playing great defense, and we have many others stepping up into their roles. We'll also have Rylen Griffen back as he had been out with an illness. I think we're gonna need a big game from Agee and Vinson on the defensive end.
So the Aggies will be fully healthy and with some momentum after last game. Obviously there will still be hiccups, but we're slowly learning to play together. Tonight will be a great test to see our continued progress and chemistry. It'll also he interesting to see how much we can impose "Bucky Ball" on teams not willing to play fast and without a lot of depth. It's gonna be a 40 minutes game, let's see if we can catch them off guard and pull another Power 4 win out and get a win for the SEC! BTHO pitt!!
