I've suffered from anxiety and depression for most of my life. It went untreated for the most, part until about 12 years ago and had been under pretty good control until about 18 months ago when it reared it's ugly head. I've benefited from meds and counseling but late last year before we returned to Zambia I began attending a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction group at Emory in Atlanta. I saw some benefits and signed up for an online MBSR course through UMass Healthcare Center for Mindfulness which I completed the same week we evacuated back to Atlanta.

A pretty well known program, Spirit Rock Meditation Center, is offering online courses for a sliding scale donation. I signed up for a couple of them - paid $30 for one, $25 for the other. If all that's currently going on is causing you to struggle you might check out the courses.

My anxiety has become much worse with all this pandemic situation... I am looking for some support and recommendations on it. Maybe you can tell me more about your experience? What do you think about CBD oil for this purpose? I would like to hear your thoughts about it. Thank you in advance!

Hi Perliza, I've suffered from anxiety for most of my life, but didn't really address it until about 12 years ago, when I was in my 50s. It ebbed and flowed depending on the stress in my life - we had a chronically ill, disabled child who lived for 18 years before passing away in 2005. Finally, about three years later, when my marriage was on the brink, I got the help I needed. At that time, I saw a psychiatrist who prescribed medication (Cymbalta) and I also began seeing a psychologist who helped my unpack the issues that dated back to my childhood - I believe a lot of my issues stemmed from being separated from my mom and dad for several months when I was six - he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and although he lived and resumed a relatively normal life, he was in the hospital for several months.

Until the last couple of years I've been able to manage things pretty well. However, a work situation )an overbearing, controlling supervisor) caused my anxiety and depression to resurface. Fearing I might go back to the place I was 12 years ago, I immediately sought help through telemedicine counseling from Zambia. When we returned home to the U.S. last year, I met with my psychologist in Atlanta to adjust my meds, began meeting with my psychologist and joined a mindfulness group, which got me back on track.

If you are struggling, please, please see a medical professional. For me, it was hard to ask for help, but when my life was in shambles, I had no choice. Now I kick myself for not getting help sooner.

Happy to do so. In another thread I shared some mindfulness apps my doctor at Emory shared with me.

One of my demons is a tendency to beat myself up for not being perfect. The Center for Mindful Self Compassion works to help folks give themself a break. Despite its dubious academic affiliation (UT), it's a good and well regarded program. The website has some guided meditation practices.

One thing to remember is life is a bell curve - on one end is the best probable outcome and the other, the very worst possible outcome. When we struggle with anxiety we live on that end of the curve even though we know the further we go from the middle of the bell curve, the lower the probability.

Perliza - if you aren't seeing a therapist or a psychiatrist, many are doing tele visits that work very well for anxiety.

Support groups have also gone online. My daughter in Dallas is part of one. It's run by a therapist, and it's free.

Nami is another organization to look at. They have chapters all over the country.

I know lots of churches are providing mental health services.

Sometimes it's just good to talk to someone, and sometimes you need more help. This is a very stressful time for everyone. You are not alone.

A daily work out program and spending my lunch hour out in my back yard in the sun has got me straight. I'm lucky.

In the past my anxiety, which included panic attacks, was so severe, at times it was difficult to function. I've been somewhat surprised that I've been able to handle the current events associated with the pandemic fairly well. I mentioned that to my psychologist not long after we arrived back in Atlanta and she said she'd heard similar things from others suffering from anxiety.

Since then I've read a couple of articles which basically said people like me were prepared for this moment, accumulating the tools to deal with the stresses many of us are facing these days. Now I'm not going to say there won't come a time when I crash, but with the mindfulness practices, working to focus on the present moment, and not dwelling on the past or unknown future, I'm doing ok today.

Great thread! I've suffered with anxiety for years, and this pandemic has really put my meds to the test. Like others have mentioned, exercising outside is HUGE for keeping a clear head.
