if the weekend you were referring to was Nov 9-11 then no, the men will be at the National Championships in Arizona. and after that I highly doubt they will be playing much water polo at all until the spring
The Aggies ended up 13th at nationals this weekend. After 2 close losses to Miami (OH) and Utah they blew out Virginia Tech to close the tournament 1-2. Cal Poly beat Michigan State for the championship.
Congratulations guys. Keep it up and good luck in the spring.
09 is right. On top of that, the competition is super slanted to the west coast. The dominant programs like USC and UCLA often have club teams in addition to their varsity programs that are still better than many of the east coast varsity programs and the midwest/southern club teams.
If I remember right, the big 10 has a weird set up where they are designated varsity by their schools, but compete in the CWPA club division, not NCAA. Don't quote me on that one.
As for the talent in Cali, its ridiculous. You almost have to have been born/raised in Cali, & lived/breathed/grown up playing water polo your whole life to be good enough to play there.
I know guys who were All State/State MVPs here in Texas H.S who were told they could walk on to the lower tier Cali schools. Most of the guys I know chose to come here and play club polo instead ha.
I would figure that since we have such a great Equestrian team, our water polo team would be better. I mean, those horses should be better swimmers, right?
The way polo is played in the NCAA is interesting - there aren't Pac-10 teams, but rather WWPA and MPSF teams. The CWPA is mainly for eastern teams for varsity.
I ref all ages of polo, but I don't do any CWPA tourns. I do follow it though, and the ladies season should be interesting to watch.
