it's like this- we might score 30pts in the ncaa and get 3rd in the nation, even though we have only 4 or 5 events that we place. That's because there are 100+ teams, with multiple members in multiple events. Okay, so in your conference meet you win those 4 or 5 events that you are best in the country in. You might not be so good (or deep) in other events. A team like t.u. has a lot of good people in a lot of events, even though they might not have many that are the tops in the country.
national track rankings are based on how many pts you might score at nationals, not based on how solid your team is across the board. Theoretically, a team could have one track star and 30 other people that have no hope of ever placing in the top 6 in any meet, and yet that "team" might be a top 20 track team.
