LINCOLN, Neb. --- Texas A&M senior Jake Boone opened the final day of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in a big way with a victory in the men's heptathlon today at the Bob Devaney Center on the University of Nebraska campus.
Boone began the day in seventh place, but had climbed into second place going into the final event -- the 1,000-meter run. Boone needed to beat the then-leader Olavi Paavi of Texas Tech by at least 11 seconds to secure the win. Boone responded with a 2:47.75 clocking which beat Paavi by more than 18 seconds. Boone's career-best point total of 5,345 edged out Kansas State's Pat Pyle's 5,301 for the Championship.
"It hasn't really hit me yet, and it probably won't until I am standing on the medal stand," said Boone, a senior from Bellville, Texas. "This is a great way to start off my senior season because it guarantees that I'm going to finish my career on a high note. It really sets me up for a great outdoor season too, because most of my best events aren't run indoors."
The Aggie multis crew combined to score a whopping 17 points with Boone's first-place finish, Allen Bulick's fourth-place performance and Jason Matthews' seventh place finish.
