Good find. Interesting idea.

I think the NCAAs deserve more attention than they get. And there is some very fast swimming in the lower divisions.

My only problem with it so far is an event of this size limits the locations to a precious few with enough capacity to host it. A&M could never host it. Neither could Texas.

Other than IUPUI & maybe Georgia Tech (Olympic Pool), where else could they have it? I'm sure there's some new pools that have popped up that I don't know about. Would they actually start building temporary pools like they do for trials and world cup meets?

Maybe Tennessee could do it. They have a brand new indoor LCM pool and two adjacent outdoor pools including a 50M pool.

They probably have the hotel rooms because they can host 100K fans for a football game.

Stanford could almost have it - they have the pool space but their championship SCY pool is outdoors.

I've seen the new pool that they built/are building in Omaha, Nebraska for US Trials this month, and from what I can tell it could EASILY host such an event.

The Nebraska pool is a temporary one, right?

USA Swimming built a pool for the Trials in Long Beach four years ago, then disassembled it after Trials were over.

Ya, I'm pretty sure the trials pool is temporary again.

Yes, it's at the Qwest center and is a temporary install.

Here's video of the pool and rest of the facility all ready for this weekend's Swimvitational. http://www.swimnetwork.com/videos/v/20080605/first_look___qwest_center_omaha-13160.html

Just to be clear - it is a temporary pool built inside an existing b-ball arena.

When SA was bidding to host trials, they were going to do that same setup inside the Alamodome.

I have a couple of swimming questions.

Do most or all high schools have 50m (50yd) pools? It seems as though most of the times are based on the long pool. Area all high school meets held in 50m pools?

I have a son entering 9th Grade at a very good (for swimming) high school here in the Houston area. He's pretty fast. We don't know much about the high school swimming scene.

All high school swimming is done in a 25 yd pool

Just to clarify - all Texas high school RACING is done in a 25 yard pool. High school teams swim in all kinds of pools. I think most high schools in Texas do not have their own pool. In Austin I'm not aware of any high schools that have their own pool. Most rent local pools and they are usually but not always 25y pools.

NCAA swimming is also raced in a 25 yard pool. Every once in awhile the NCAA will switch to meters (usually to help athletes get Olympic times).

ALL internationally sanctioned meets are contested in meters - either short course or long course. The Olympics are always raced in a 50M pool. All world records are in meters. I believe only the USA recognizes records in yards.

Spicewood is correct. Most high schools either rent a public pool, or partner up with other schools in order to build nice pools. In this case they usually build 50 meter by 25 yard pools that can be used to host club meets so that they can bring in more revenue.

JAD, what school is your son going to?

i know some schools us pools at Middle Schools/Jr. Highs in their District. Some districts even have "district pools" that all the teams in the district use to train/compete in. Not always the best quality of pools, but still, water is water ha

I'm not sure about Houston, but DFW has a pretty good swimming scene. My highschool had it's own pool and so did several in the area around us. Many pools rented lanes from us during a certain time of the day.

When I lived in Waco we reserved lanes every other afternoon from the local Y.

Both pools are 25yds, but the Southlake pool was 50m I believe and they usually kept a bulkhead in the middle to make it 25m.

UIL racing is usually done in yds but if it is a meter pool they just pretend it is no different(which made me mad since I swam the 500!)

agswim -

He will be a freshamn at Katy Taylor in the fall. He has decent times in the free and fly, but has never really had any lessons or instructions. He just swam on a neighborhood team every year for the last 10 years. His seed time in the 50yd free was 24.69 (usually right around 25 or a little over) and the fly was 28.73. The posted times to make the HS Varsity team are 53.99 in the 100 free and 101.99 in the 100 fly. We will see at their tryouts on August 5th.
