Can someone please explain how tennis rankings are computed?

In this week's poll, tu (1-0 on the week) moves up 3 places with a win over a 4-6 Witchita State team. A&M jumps 8 spots WITHOUT playing. Baylor (3-0 on the week) drops 8 spots even though they haven't lost since March 8th to a Pepperdine team that was ranked #9 at the time.

I don't understand how that crazy poll works. It is worse than the football polls.

I'm no expert...maybe someone else knows for sure...but in the past, it has seemed that there is a substantial "lag time" between match results and effect on rank.

The reason for the huge differences in the rankings from last week to this week is that they switched to computer rankings this week. The tennis rankings are figured as a poll for like the first half of the season at which point it switches to a computer ranking. Biggest difference I noticed besides our 8 spot jump was that USC dropped from 5 to 17, having lost only three times all year (twice to #1 UCLA and once to #6 Stanford). These rankings will become more finely tuned as the weeks progress.

the doc is correct. and though the computer rankings are quite different from the poll, i think they're more accurate in the long run. at one time duke was ahead of us in the poll when our records were 1-6 and 6-2 respectively, even though we had the head to head. the rankings are a little off now, but they should get more accurate in the coming weeks. also, pretty damn impressive to have 4 singles players in the top 104. WHOOP!

feels so good, feelin good again...
