Should arthroscopic cartilage clean up in a knee still be a painful knee afer 8+ weeks? This is in regard to Tiger Woods.

It depends on what they did to him. If it's just a straight cartilage tear that they went in and cleaned up the answer is probably no. If they had to do more that clean it up then the answer could be yes. Often times if the the person who has knee surgery has a mid substance tear (in the middle of the meniscus instead of on the side) then the orthopedic surgeon will suture or stitch the cartilage back together. When this happens the recovery time is extended by 4-6 weeks. Also throw in the fact that Tiger is now in his 30's and healing/recovery time is longer the older you get and I'd say there are scenarios that I could see Tiger still having issues 10 weeks out. Let's also throw in the fact that the media is making this out to be ALOT bigger deal than it is. Every time he takes a misstep and limps for a few strides Judy Rankin is damn near wanting to call Life Flight to get Tiger removed from the course or give him a purple heart for playing under such extreme discomfort. If ANY of us had knee surgery and then tried to walk and play a golf course like Torrey Pines 2 1/2 months later there would be times that we feel a twinge or discomfort. I really don't think that this is a big deal.

Thanks ErathAg90. Yeh, I would think Adam Scott playing with a broken bone in his hand would be a bigger deal, although playing with any injury is tougher. The impressive thing about Tiger is being able to compete so well after a two month layoff and playing his first 18 just last Wed.

Depends how major the tear was and whether or not it was sutured properly.

If one must continue with pain, a cortisone shot may be in order.

With the dough Tiger has, one would hope it was sutured properly. He should have the best orthopedic surgeon in the world.

Obviously, Tiger knows his situation and timing better than I do and perhaps there's a good reason, but I just don't understand why he waited to have surgery right after the Masters instead of last November.

I had mine the same day Tiger had his. I measure
my progress by tennis. Hitting a golf ball with
the left knee as the fulcrum, could be painful.
Not to mention a distraction to say the least. Not sure the point of the question, but that's my
take for what it's worth.

I think the difference in you and I having this surgery and someone like Tiger having this surgery is the amount of torque put on that knee.

Add to the fact that he actually "snaps" that knee when he swings, and I cant imagine the pressure he feels on every swing.

this is the 3rd surgery he's had on that knee. that + getting into his 30's = i'd be surprised if he wasn't having a fair amount of pain
