Olympic SWIMMING Trials....

That psych sheet shows all qualifiers, not who will actually swim those events. For example I don't think Phelps will race 400M free. Or Lochte in 200 fly.

Christine Marshall is the Aggie with the best chance to make it to Beijing. She has to be one of the six fastest in the 200M free to go. She is seeded 6th but just beneath her is Kate Ziegler, Amanda Weir, and Kara Lynn Joyce.

Kristen Heiss is seeded 10th in 200 back but she has to finish 1st or 2nd to go and she isn't likely to move up that much.

Apparently I have a slow morning. I went through the events and looked at Phelps' seed and my guess on whether he swims it. I have no idea if he has said what he will compete in or not, or how the finals schedule will affect his event selection, just my way to spend wednesday morning when I should be working...

Event / seed / guess on participation

400 IM / 1 / Yes
400 Free / 5 / No
200 Free / 1 / Yes
100 Back / 2 / No
200 Fly / 1 / Yes
100 Free / 1 / No
200 Back / 3 / No
200 IM / 1 / Yes
100 Fly / 2 / Yes

That's 5 individuals, assuming he is on all 3 relays, that's a shot at 8 medals again... hopefully all gold this time.

So how does that work? When will Lochte and Phelps indicate they won't be in those races?

I think the psych sheet basically shows all qualifiers. Many of the athletes won't even go to the event because they are seeded very low, they're not in shape, etc.

Shortly before the event (I'm sure there is a cutoff date) the athletes and coaches will confirm the entries. Then they'll produce a final seeding including heats.

H2O - I think in general your guess is as good as any on Phelps. Many believe he will swim 100 free in prelims to record one best effort time. That will justify his spot on the 4x100 free relay and avoid the controversy of 2004 when some felt Gary Hall should have been on the relay instead of Phelps (I thought Phelps earned it). Some also think Phelps will swim one of the backstroke events but I doubt it. There just isn't a good reason for it. His schedule is already packed and most of the Trials races are prelims/semis/finals so he has a ton of races.

I think there are some interesting things to look at in the Trials. Crocker may make it only in 100 fly. He's not top 10 in 100 free or 50 free.

I just have a gut feel that one of the Texas guys (Crocker, Peirsol, Hansen) will get upset and not make it in one of their races.

Look at womens' 200 IM. Coughlin is seeded first and she only recently raced it. Will she swim it at Trials?

I didnt see which events are on what days, either at Trials, or the Olympics, but I would not be surprised if Phelps swam either the 200bk OR the 100Fr. I agree with all the other events. Just about the same as last year

More on the trials schedule at www.usaswimming.org.

Phelps - more than anyone, needs to look at what events are what day at the Olympics. No one in the world will swim as many events as him.

Spicewood,

Phelps claims he may swim 9 individual events including the 400 free. Personally I doubt it as well. He gets a pass on the IM and fly events and makes the team in those events regardless if he swims them in Omaha so you never know.

Where did you hear that? cuz unless I failed to read the fine print on that article, it never said that...

It would be suicide to swim all those at Trials, no matter how super human he is. And dont give him the free pass in either IMs, ESPECIALLY if he does swim that many events. Lochte will give him a run if Phelps doesn't bring his 'A' game

Spice - looks like that article answers your question about Coughlin in the 200IM

Hansen is the one I think is most likely to get bumped out of one of his main events (200br). That event is stacked, Im lookin for the 2 other texas guys to make it (Spann & Shanteau)

Piersol could be in trouble in one of the Backstrokes, depending on if/which one Phelps swims. That would make for one heck of a battle (Piersol/Lochte/Phelps) in either/both backstrokes.

But I dont think Phelps' 400fr seed time does him justice. as fast as his 200fr is, i bet he could give the top spot a run if he went for it. Everyone knows he has the endurance to hold it for a 400, its just a matter of whether or not he wants to try & make it. I could see him swimming it, depending on how it falls compared to his other events.

I do agree with the point about him swimming the 100 free in prelims just to show people that he is one of the 4 fastest in the country to silence all the critics, but I doubt hell swim it in Finals (or China for that matter).

I don't think Phelps swims the 400fr. It is the same day as the 400 IM. Even Phelps would "feel" those two races in the same day. If Phelps wants to seriously go after 8 events - I don't think two of them can be 400s.

I think Phelps might swim one of the two backstrokes. He is soooo close to Peirsol's 100 WR. Depending on how he does in prelims - maybe he swims semis and finals.

Lochte is entered in some strange events too - like the 200 fly and 100 br. No reason for him to swim those at all.

I think Phelps' easiest races will be fly. He and Crocker are clearly 1 or 2 in the 100 and no one is close to Phelps in the 200. Lochte is a contender in both IMs but Phelps, even if he loses one to Lochte, goes to Beijing. But I think Phelps wins both fly and IMs. I think Crocker will lose the 100 to Phelps but is way ahead of #3.

Peirsol could lose both backstrokes to Lochte or Phelps. Peirsol will still go to Beijing but it is possible he might go in only 1 back event depending on Phelps.

Hansen probably feels some real heat. He swam a 59.61 a few months ago, which is very fast. I think Hansen takes the 100 but has a race in the 200.

Just three more days......

Big Papa,

You're correct I read "has entered" as he was going to potentially swim them all. Spicewood is correct that you are automatically entered if you had qualifying times.

Did y'all see the number of Masters swimmers that qualified? Wow.

Well on my way! I raced the last two saturdays in the parent coach relay at the kids summer league swim meet. We stacked our team with another guy I swim with, a triathalon guy and past all american butterflyer from UH. We smoked all the other parents and coaches by a large margin.

My head is still swelling from when the college age coach/swimmer looked over at me on the blocks and told me he came here to win. I went a 25 in the 50 and it wasn't even close. He hit the wall and said "Dude who are you?"

It was a neighborhood pool, very shallow, low blocks, hot etc. After standing in the sun all day. I think in a real pool I've got a 24 free in me but think my best race will be the 200 free and the fifty and hundred fly.

I've hit it hard this week. Today is my sixth day in row so I'll have about 18000 yds for the week.

Beretta - No doubt in my mind you will go low 24 or 23 in the 50 in a real meet.

I hope to go 23.9999 next spring. I'll be 50 later this year so I age up - a good thing in Masters!

I'm swimming LCM now - 4 days a week and only about 2700 M per workout. Rarely reach 3000M. So I suppose that's about 11000 M per week. I'm really trying to make a few meaningful stroke improvements.

I wish I could swim some long course! This week is abnormal for me I've just been sick of work and heading to the pool early. I'm vacationing all next week and hope to get a couple of open water swims in the ocean.

I turned 44 in May so I'll still be in the 40-44 age group in the spring. I hope to get a meet actually. The fat old parent relay got my competitive juices flowing.

I'm gonna renew my expired USA-S card so I can race a bit of SCY this fall. I want some more race experience before next spring. I don't think I'm doing any LCM races. Zones is at the Woodlands and it is damn hot to race outdoors in late July.

Great article in the new york times magazine today about 41 year old female swimmer who should make the team. The article stated that swimming is kinder to aging compared to other sports. She would be the oldest in swimming. I think Rowdy Gaines is the currwnt oldest olympic swimmer.
BigPapaB
How long do you want to ignore this user?
unless im mistaken, that female swimmer would be Dara Torres. She won Nationals last summer just a few months after giving birth to her 3rd(ish?) child. Rowdy has been out of the Olympic scene for quite some time now. Dara is by far the oldest to even come close to making the team. Gary Hall is gettin pretty old now as well, but he doesnt have as good a shot to make the team as she does (at least i dont think)
dylan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, if she makes the team she will be the oldest, surpassing Rowdy Gaines' record--he was 35 I believe when he last made the team.

What a first day! Two world records!

The oldest participant in trials this year is Susan von Der Lippe. She is a 42 yr. old Masters swimmer. She qualified in two events - 100 fly and 100 breast. I saw her race in Masters Nationals two months ago. She is an amazing swimmer - regardless of age. She is an Olympic silver medalist from 1984 (!).

However she is not a contender like Dara Torres - already a four-time Olympian.

Check out the NY Times article and the pic of her in a two-piece:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/29/magazine/29torres-t.html?_r=1&ref=olympics&oref=slogin

The trials are off to a great start. The men's 400 IM was an amazing race.

The prelims are streaming live on nbcolympics.com with Josh Davis narrating.

I must have set my tivo to record the trials weeks ago because I had no idea that they were on until I got home last night. I was very pleasantly surprised to find it already taped.

Both 400 IM's were great races. Phelps and Lochte pushing each other to the end was incredible. And watching Hoff going from being a couple of seconds down on the WR to more than a second up was unbelievable.
