There's no rule saying you have to sing the anthem...? It's totally up to the individual...the guy cried on the first day...I'm pretty sure it means something to him...

Phelps singing the National Anthem would probably come out "Oh thay can thou thee...". im at least glad he didnt sing it.

I know for one of his early medals the recording of the anthem was off horribly. I think it started somewhere in the middle, repeated a verse, then abruptly cut off. Maybe at that point he decided not to sing/lip sync to avoid looking silly if it happens again.

Maybe you shouldn't be pissed of over trivial stuff like this. It's bad for your health.

You don't have to sing to be respectful. I'm reminded of a baseball game about a 10 or 15 years ago (maybe more, don't remember) when we all wish Rosanne Barr would have just stood there and not sung.

Actions speak louder than words. Right now, Phelps could whisper the anthem if he chose to. Its his choice.

Someone should stuff a gold medal up Bigsteve's ass

I remember when bigsteve won the Gold, and stood on the podium, while 80M proud Americans watched. I thought to myself..."Man I'm more proud that he is singing, than actually having won.

Also, back when I was at A&M, I was fortunate enough to draw seat in front of bigsteve... and his total commitment and enthusiasm to singing the National Anthem, was so tremendous, I remember Fran came across the field, and went up to him, and said, "I've never felt more proud to be an American, than hearing you sing, from across the field. We are going to Win." Well, we all know how that turned out, but none-the-less, I know he was inspired. Unfortunately, the entire apposing team turned to bigsteve, pointed to him, while putting their hand over their heart... tapped it 3 times, and almost in unison, you could see them lip-sync - "You complete me."

BigSteve - I too salute you! All that you do for America... we are proud!

Take heart, the women rowers sang it when they won the gold.
