Gymnastics scoring

They really need to work on the scoring system for gymnastics. A girl shouldn't win anything in the vault when she lands her knees. I understand the desire to reward difficulty, but it seems like all you have to do is try a difficult move. It doesn't seem to matter if you complete the move successfully, only that you tried it.

I think they need to quit dealing with tenth and hundredth of a point deductions, and deduct multiple points for falling. It seems to me that you can't get less than an eight on any routine. People should be getting a two when they face plant.

Although I didn’t see the entire event, I saw the vault you’re talking about and was shocked at the score.

Even her “performance” score was above Sacramones’.

Yeah Sacramone got totally hosed. Thing is, you just KNEW there would be some examples of that, favoring China, in these Olympics.

Another example...this may be a SPOILER if you aren't checking the results...

But Nastia Liukin had the exact same score as the China girl in the uneven bars but still ended up getting silver because of some idiotic tie-breaker rule. Gymnastics has always been a hotbed for controversy, but sometimes its just rediculous. I like watching gymnastics, but I really had subujective scoring systems like this and figure skating.

Losing on a squirrelly tie-breaker to a girl that shouldn't even be there due to her age has to sting a bit. This so-called competition is totally screwed up.

I usually don't mind watching gymnastics every four years, but I think because of the focus put on difficulty this competition has been very sloppy. I think it's more impressive watching someone do a clean routine than a lot of these routines.

an Olympics gold should not be decided by a tie breaker as rediculous as that. The right thing to do would be to give 2 gold medals (to Nastia and He).

And I really feel bad for Sacramone, she deserves better than what those "judges" gave.

I don't mind the difficulty aspect...any of these girls could stick an easy vault, so they need to really reward the hard ones. BUT they need to punish falls more. You fall (especially on vault), it should essentially be game over. If you can't land it consistantly, you should have to think long and hard whether to even try it.

Judges need to detail their deductions for public review, IMO (maybe they are, I dunno...but doesn't seem like it). Needs to be some accountability.

And the whole tie thing is dumb too...especially if I heard correctly that the Olympics is the only gymnastics event that does it that way. One tiebreaker is cool (maybe execution over difficulty). But if they have to drill down to the point they did last night...just call it a damn tie. The world won't implode if two get a gold and no bronze is given out. Ties happen even in sports that aren't decided by judging.

i guess i dont get why the tie breaker is so complicated. what did i miss. there was one applied to the mens vault and nobody had a problem with it but it seemed just as simple as the womens one. i agree it shouldve never come to that point but it did. so what am i missing about the tie breaker that makes it so wrong

I think it's how far they had to go down the line on the tiebreaker, which I think differed from the men's instance of it. It was at like the third level and the deciding factor was about as telling as flipping a coin in deciding who was actually better. That and Americans were already peeved since the American "looked" like she had a better and cleaner performance to begin with.

Sometimes a tie is jsut a tie. Their "tie-breaker" is really just something pulled out of someone's ass that really doesn't point to any difference between the performances. They should give two gold and be done with it.

And I agree with the post above that they should allow US, Chinese, and Russian judges. Throwing out the high's and low's helps eliminate at least some of the bias, and if you wanted, you could expand the judges from 6 to 8 and throw out two high's and two low's.

I guess the fact they don't trust judges to be impartial when their own country is involved is just another sign of how screwed up the judging for this sport is.

The stupid tie-breaker throws out the lowest score, so in effect awars the one with a "Worse" lower score!

I think the judges have been highly biased.

Our two girls are badasses. Nastia should have 4 or 5 golds. yes she should

The tiebreaker has been in play since what 1996? Little late for all of this griping about the tiebreaker system.

I think the judges have been sniffing to much lead paint in all those Chineese toys.
