I'd never played Badminton before until I played my uncle who is 25 years older than me. He played in a league.

How could I not kick his ass.

Oh yeah...........it's apparently one of those things that looks much easier than it really is. Think I scored 6 points in three SETS.

badminton should remain, its a real sport even if it isnt played in the US that much.

rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming are not sports and should be banned for life and anyone who participated should be shot.

you should just rename this thread "i don't think these should be in the olympics because the US doesn't do well in them".

I actually really enjoyed trampoline. had a lot of the same cool elements of diving with gymnastics, while bouncing up in the air 25-30 feet.

sync diving is pretty pointless. There's already sync swimming and diving. We don't need a blend to cover both.

I am not a big fan of "judged" sports. Earlier in this Olympics, a diver got a 9.0 from one judge and 4.5 from another. I know they throw out the highest and the lowest scores, but how can two supposed "experts" see the same dive and come to that different a conclusion unless extreme political and/or personal bias is involved?

Trampoline is NOT a sport! Good lord, it may be fun to watch but it's ridiculous that you can win an Olympic gold medal doing something that any reasonably coordinated 10 year old can do. (Okay, I know it's more difficult than that - but seriously. Not a sport.)

I personally don't care for "rec-room activities" as Olympic sports. Table tennis, handball, trampoline, etc are not sports, they're activities. I can't wait to see what the future brings - maybe they'll add dodgeball, putting and pilates!

Any sport that is totally dominated by one country (e.g. Table Tennis) should not be in the olympics because it gives that country free golds and goes against the international competition nature of the olympics.

there are several on that list that are all equally ridiculous (particularly trampoline, synchronized anything, and rhythmic gymnastics) and it would be impossible to find a more ridiculous sport to add to the games.

adding flying trapeze as an olympic sport might even be less ridiculous than those.

I am not so much for Badminton and Table Tennis as Olympic sports.

But you have to admit the speed at which they play them is amazing.

My other entries are Soccer and Baseball.

Soccer already has a every 4 years major world wide event. Not to mention all the tourneys of champions in between. Really useless to put it in the Olympics.

And Baseball? Come on. Although it is a sport, it is not exactly world wide in nature.

But what do I know, I thought that Beach Volleyball was not a good entry. Now it may be one of the more popular.

RACEWALKING! It's on NBC right now if anyone is up to see it.

I DARE anyone to challenge their spot atop the Pantheon of Useless Sports. Hell, not one of the ladies is actually walking. Also, judges warn them by walking up and showing them a yellow or red card! It's like that fluffy thing the ref uses to issue warnings in that Dodgeball movie!

badminton should stay. The shuttlecock has been clocked at over 200mph.

quote:
Men's doubles player Fu Haifeng of China set the official world smash record of 332 km/h (206 mph) on June 3, 2005 in the Sudirman Cup. The fastest smash recorded in the singles competition is 305 km/h (189 mph) by Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.

that's crazy! and why the hell do they call it that?

To add an element of danger to the boring old olympics can we add LAWN DARTS in 2012?

Any subjective "sport" is not really a sport. If you need a judge to tell you who was better, then it is simply performance art.

It should really be simple:

1. no events that require music
2. no events that require a costume
3. no events that require accessories

That would eliminate:

Rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, and all equestrian events (horses are accessories).

Where do you draw the line between a costume and a uniform?
who8p
How long do you want to ignore this user?
the equestrian activities belong in the Olympics. you don't get much more universal in sports. Horses are ridden competitively in most every country in the world. the horses themselves are amazing athletes and so are their riders.

I think thay need to add disc golf as a sport

Trampoline...I think this is just a sport of people who couldn't hack it in gymnastics or diving.

I respect sync swimming...some of the stuff they do take an incredible amount of strength. I understand people hate subjective scored sports, but I think it's as legit as gymnastics and diving.

When the costume/uniform creates "artistry" that is incorporated into scoring....

SJEag - sync swimmers are unquetionably great athletes. A long time ago I knew well a nationally ranked synchronized swimmer that trained in Santa Clara. I even watched a few practices. Very demanding. But it is not sport - it is art. The costumes, makeup, the prancing on deck, and of course the music DQ it as an Olympic sport.

I'm okay with many of the equestrian events, but there was one, that was horrible. It just walked/slow trotted around the ring from corner to corner. We watched several competitors and we still don't know what they were judged on. Basically it was like the Eukanuba(sp) dog show but with a rider instead of someone holding a leash. As much as the "drama" sports of gymnastics, figure skating, diving, etc drive me crazy, this was even worse.

Spicewood, as much as I laughed at your list and quickly agreed, if you get technical, football requires costume (even if you call it a uniform) and requires accessories (football, helmet, pads, etc).
SpicewoodAg

Kinto - Yeah you're right - football requires "stuff" but it has nothing to do with the score. And protective gear (ala fencing, boxing helmets, water polo hats) is allowed.

And of course football isn't an Olympic sport.

I saw a few seconds of team rhythmic gymnastics. Oh my god it was hideous.
kinto
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Oh don't ever watch that! There's no redeeming value in that so called "sport". How is that a sport? Its no more sport that ballet. Are they going to add ballet, cheerleading and interpretive dance to the London games?

I saw an olympic sport while I was in a waiting room that I'd never seen before and wanted to know if yall knew the name.

Girls were playing it. It was like combo of lacrosse, rugby, basketball, and soccer. It's almost like a dry version of water polo.

It was an indoor court but looked like lacrosse with a bigger goal. Played with something like a volleyball. Players mainly used their hands and would bounce the ball every other step or so.

Any ideas?
