Here is the way I understand this regional stuff...the NCAA committee, which Cass is on, will seed teams 1 thru 16. These team are not necessarily the team currently ranked 1 thru 16. A&M has wins over a few teams ranked higher than them, so the possibility exists that A&M could be one of the 16 seeded teams. Remember last year...we were ranked 5th or 6th, but went into the tournament as the 4th seed. There is a chance we could host, but it is very slim.
Also, since 9/11, the NCAA has regionalized it's tournaments...and it will happen again with tennis. What this means is that the NCAA committee will seed the teams 1 thru 16 ONLY and than send teams in the same region to the closest site. Last year, seeds were 1-16, 17-32, 33-48, 49-64. The higher the seed, the lower seeded team you played. As the 4th seed last year, A&M got teams seeded 28th, 44th and 60th...or something like that. This year however, you could see a regional with Baylor, A&M, Rice and SMU....or Texas, Baylor, A&M and someother Texas or Louisiana school. Baylor is guaranteed a regional and Texas is on the bubble with us....however, the committee could award only one Texas regional, which would be in Waco, and send us, Texas and SMU or Rice there.
The regionalization of the tournament could really hurt the National Championships at A&M if all the Texas schools get bunched up and knock each other out. For the tournament to be a success, A&M doen't have to make the championships, but at least one or more Texas schools need to. This may be difficult to do if only one or 2 regionals are awarded here in Texas.
