the coaching question is no longer the issue in my opinion. if this were a customer service help line this is when you stop arguing with the technical staff and demand to speak to the supervisor.

we now should be talking about bill byrne's inability to create or motivate positive change. as athletic director that's his job, but i'm not seeing it. here is the record of our volleyball program under byrne's management.
2004 Decent
2005 Concerning
2006 Troubling
2007 Negligent
2008 Incompetent

when 2007 came and went and the management appeared to make no change in the situation, i decided there was no further point in critiquing the coaches. if byrne is okay with this performance, it's a waste of time to talk about it. i'll watch the team online or at Rollie and try to enjoy it for what it is: a mediocre sports team in a saturated market.

How hard is it for the 15th largest athletic budget in the country to have a winning record?

We're past the point where our program should have moved in a different direction. I have no idea why Byrne has shown so much more patience with the volleyball staff than he has with those in other sports.

You could see quite a bit of patience from Byrne dealing with Watkins - this situation isn't much different. He'll do what he needs to do when the season's over, just like he did with Mark Johnson.

I don't think anyone is asking for a mid-season firing, just wondering why nothing was done last year when it was quite clear the program wasn't going in the right direction.

Yes, definitely not calling for a mid-season firing. IMHO the Corbelli’s gambled big-time by recruiting outside hitters to play the Libero position this year. But, it was better than using walk-ons as in previous years. I’m assuming she was attempting to emulate the Sykora factor here, but I wanted to get different perspectives on the potential pay-off. The one bright spot in the whole experiment has certainly been Kelsey Black. If she continues to improve and LC/JC will just keep her out of the Libero jersey, she might very well grow to be our best all-around player (the girl has some serious leaping ability and can also dig and block).

P.S. If anyone in the athletic department happens to read this thread, would you please ask someone to pull your “VIMAX” ads from the AggieAthletics.com/volleyball page…I have young female family members that idolize A&M volleyball and frequent that page. Those “Surprise her with a bigger *****- Add inches right now” banners are classless and inappropriate.

I believe that would be on your end. Might want to clear your cookies or check for spyware. The athletics site is clean.

Back to Volleyball - The coaches should have been gone a long time ago. I'd be happy with a mid-season firing, actually a double mid-season firing. They should have been gone a long time ago.

You can't judge our program based on how we've finished in the Big 12. The conference is top heavy with the occasionally good teams. Teams lower than 3rd place in the Big 12 rarely compete on the national stage. And, teams outside of the top 10 -15 in the nation rarely compete for the National Title.

Stop complaining about our facilities and how they affect the recruiting. If our facilities were pitiful we would not have been selected to host the Regional Volleyball Tournament in 2005. Our facilities have not suddenly become outdated. When the stands were full for the texas game it was pretty impressive. Fans can’t be expected to show up in the thousands to watch a program that is struggling this bad.

It is clear our team has talent, they are just being poorly mismanaged (I wouldn’t even call it coaching).

Wrong genius, it definitely was a rotational banner ad embedded inside aggieathletics.com's flash animation. I could scroll up and down the page and the ad unmistakably remained in the flash animation section right next to the "Fan Center/AGGIES ALL ACCESS".

Many people all over the country who are in tune with the national volleyball scene repeatedly call G. Rollie White one of the best places in the country to watch a volleyball match. The sight lines are great and the atmosphere is great, and it is exceptional to have a dedicated volleyball facility (instead of playing matches in a basketball gym) especially when you consider the state of the program. I cannot speak for the quality of other facilites (lockerrooms, weight rooms, etc.) but the gym itself is one of the best in the country for watching a volleyball match, and the fan support is quite special, especially when the team is having better success.

The only reason Texas is hosting frequent regionals in the NCAAs and we haven't had one since 2005 is because the NCAA only wants teams that are expected to make their own regionals to host, thereby greatly increasing ticket sales and revenue. Yes its a bit shady, but that is how its done.

Did a quick search to see how our attendance stacks up nationally.

Even in the last few years when we have been struggling, we are still among the top schools in the country for volleyball attendance.
07-15th
06-18th
05-16th

Imagine how good the fan support would be for a top 10 or top 20 ranked team.

The other aspect of our fan support that is really cool is the number of actual students that turn out. In many big cities you get a lot of families and retirees attending the non-revenue college sports. While its nice to have anyone coming and cheering for the team, I think most players would agree that playing in front of loud, cheering college students is a lot more fun than playing in front of less enthusiastic older adults. I know there are plenty of exceptions, but generally you don't see mom's and dad's with young children showing up with their chest painted for a volleyball game.

The real problem with the team this year is the lack of defense. When you watch Texas and Penn State or even mid-ranked teams, you see a libero all over the court and either DS's or OH's willing to put their body on the line while at the same time putting themselves in the right position to make plays. I wish this coach would start recruiting players that have proven themselves on the defensive side of the court in high school. What is the reason that you're libero has to be 6 feet?? Is there one? She's not going to be hitting. I know of two-three liberos playing in Texas who I believe could help turn this team around. They, however, are not six feet so they won't get the opportunity to play at G. Rollie.

Witness this team's match at KState last night!

Very close to being good.

Nebraska and Tu got beat - everyone is vulnerable at this point!

LOL. Spyware owned. You really think Aggieathletics would have those ads on its front page??

And you have the audacity to attack people for letting know of your mistake? Again, use some common sense.

I had to see it for myself to believe that they both got beaten. I think the confidence level went up after KU. Hopefully the loss last night won't phase them and they'll come out strong on Saturday.
