Coach G. spoke at the Midland A&M Club luncheon today. He is in town for Linsey Johnson's wedding tonight. Linsey's father and grandfather came to hear coach speak.

Coach G. is in his 10th season at A&M. Last year was his best year yet. The team advanced to the Elite Eight.

He started out with an 8 minute video, then spoke and took questions from the floor.

Things Coach G. said as I recall them:

Returns 9 starters from teams of the last 2 years. Eight have earned all conference or conference tournament recognition. Expects this year to be another good year.

Big 12 conference is tough. Nebraska and Texas are very good teams. Conference champions are usually ranked in the top 5 nationally. Considers, Nebraska and SMU to be biggest rivals. Has never lost to t.u. National championship and final four games are in Austin next year. Team has had large-margin victories in Austin.

Last year's team played with a lot of passion and had good chemistry on and off the field. His players are intense and tough; Amanda Burke took a cheap-shot hit during a game, still finished the game despite taking 20 stitches after the game to close a large cut in her leg. She played another game the next day.

He and Coach Stephenson evaluate potential recruits at club-level tournaments rather than high school games. Time efficiency/constraints, better competetion and more concentrated talent are major reasons. Entire summer is spent evaluating potential recruits and coaching Olympic Development teams.

Recruits mostly Texas. Talent level in Texas is very good. Goes out of state when necessary. Speed is the name of the game in college soccer.

Talent levels on all teams for all sports are cyclic. Hard to maintain a high talent level every year.

Soccer has 12 scholarships to offer. Partials are allowed like baseball. Currently has 24 ladies on scholarship. No one on the team has a 100% scholarship but some get close. Uses accounting system to determine scholarship level based on personal contribution to the team. Has proposed scholarship increases the last to years to the NCAA but the "Have Not" and Ivy League schools have voted it down.

Ranked A&M soccer facilities 8th in the conference. Several games rained out, team meetings were held under the softball bleachers, rain or shine. Can't complain now. Wally appropriated $5M for ongoing construction; new field drainage system, sidewalks, locker and conference rooms.

A&M fans are best in the conference. First in attendance, fifth nationally (1800 per game avg, 2500 for big games). Purposely sandwiches football games with Friday and Sunday soccer games so that football fans can attend. Welcomes everyone out.

Heather Ragsdale is now playing professionally. Linsey Johnson made the Under-21 Olympic Development Team.

What a great job Coach Guerrieri has done!
Super update. Thanks!

Corrections to my post above:

Nicky Thrasher is probably the one playing professionally rather than Heather Ragsdale.

Coach G. has submitted proposals "two" times to the NCAA to raise scholarship limit numbers.

I can't believe these girls don't get a full ship! I went to 1 game (SMU) last year with my kids and it was great! More importantly, they loved it.

Hopefully, with the team's success this will change. Does NC, Portland, SMU, etc. give full ships?

As I see it, other teams can and might give 100% scholarships but all teams are limited to 12 equivalent scholarships. No team can have everyone with 100% schlolarship because I would think they need more than 12 players to field a competitive team.

Since Coach G. said he has 24 on scholarship then A&M players only average 50% scholarships. He did say that a few players get close to 100% so that means other players have to get less than 50%.

What is the time schedule for these improvements? Soccer is one of the top three programs on campus (men's tennis and volleyball being the others), and it has to have the highest ratio of competitive success to facilities of any program at A&M. Hopefully, the new facilities will be in place soon.

Thanks for the report. Coach G is an asset to our athletic department. When he speaks we should take note.

Coach G. indicated that the soccer field was all torn up and the drainage system was under construction. He didn't give a completion date for the field work or the building.

The TAMU Sports web site indicates that the soccer building is to be completed after the softball buildings because lines from the softball building will run under the soccer building. A July 24th picture shows the exterior footers are poured and there is plumbing stubbed out of the ground for the soccer building. The site does not indicate the completion date for the building. Hopefully it will be ready for the start of the season but there's a lot of work remaining.

Anybody know if Jessica Hamilton is going to play this year? She hurt her knee in each of the last two seasons. Hope she's good to go this year.

Coach G. indicated that 9 starters return from teams of the last two years. I assume that Jessica Hamilton is the reason he says "from teams of the last two years". Meaning she'll be back this year, but I don't know for sure because he didn't give the names of the 9 returning starters.

I don't think Jessica Hamilton will be back. She was terrific the short time she was able to play. Maybe the starters from two years ago Coach G meant were Heather Ragsdale and Martha Moore?

Coach G. ran a good soccer camp according to my son (about a week ago). The "campers" ended each evening with "yell practice (good bull!)!"

After looking back at the past 2 years soccer history and team awards, I think the returning starters Coach G might have been referring to are:
Ragsdale - 2000 Leading scorer
Johnson - 2001 Leading scorer
Smith - Listed as Team's fastest player
Goin (redshirted last year)
Starns - Captain
Strutz - Midfield MVP
Burke - Started every game in 2001
Moore - Top defender from 2000
Labhart - Started all games in 2001 at left back
Martin - Defensive MVP in 2001

I think Hamilton dropped out of school last spring, so she's done.

Question mark might be "who's the goalkeeper this year?"

As a HS referee, I've been watching some good players here in Jacksonville, FL, for a while. In particular, one girl who's also state ranked in Cross Country. How can I get Coach G. to give them a look?

One Southwest Conference band director of the (Adams) era reportedly said "I dread going against the Aggie Band...It takes two weeks to recover from the trauma."

Flaggie-

email Coach G. I'm afraid that's about all you can do under NCAA rules unless you have a prior relatonshio with the girl (friend of the family, etc.)

Blame the NCAA, not A&M. That's all any school is allowed.

Coach G has done an unbelieveable job. And he is very smart in the way he schedules the games. Giving folks a chance to see the gals on Friday or Sunday is the only way to go.

Little wonder the soccer program has been on the rise.

It is not enough to aim, you must hit.
