Is there any such thing as a walk-on try out for the golf team? Just wondering if anybody happened to know.

if you are good enough to play for A&M, I would think they would have talked to you.

that being said, I think there was a thread on here before about golf walk ons. Might want to search it

bigfoots -

that is what i have thought as well. i am a 1 handicap at Traditions Club (playing from the tips, which i know is below average for the guys on the team) and could have played smaller college golf but i was set on coming to A&M for academic reasons. and if anyone could bump that thread for me that would be awesome, i don't have that feature.

It looks like the guys on the team this year are no worse than a 3 or 4 handicap, and I assume they play their tourneys from the back tees. I don't know what the difficulty is of the courses they've played on though.

That is the link for the prospective student athlete questionaire, although I hear that they have not been working for some sports on the new site, but probably worth a try anyways.

You could also just email the coach, or, if you played in HS, ask your high school coach if he can get you a try-out, or at least a response to an email, or maybe cozy up with a pro at traditions. I'm sure they have a good relationship with the coaches, and if they see you're legitimately good, you might be able to talk them into mentioning it to coach Higgins.

It's probably too late for this season, but maybe for the next. Either way, if you want to legitimately be on the team, then you probably need to take your playing more seriously, and practice as though you're already on the team. This probably includes weight training.

Did you play in HS? And if so, how did your scores compare against the kind of guys that are currently walk-ons on similar courses?

shoot, if you are a 1 handicap at traditions, you might have a chance. More power to you if you get on.

Also, if you ever need someone to play with at Traditions, I suck, but am dying to play that course...

12th,

The short answer to that is you are fighting title 9. I spoke to coach this monday about that very topic and he is at his max for players. Though he is in favor of walk-on try outs, there just isn't any room. That being said, should you qualify for the U. S. Am/Open....I am sure he would take note.

2012 - if you play at Traditions, then you have a chance to pick up a game with the guys. If you do, you will see if you measure up. In all the years I have watched college golf, I have rarely seen a walk-on get into the lineup. You might make the team, but the odds that you play are pretty slim.

I think this thread has some of the previous conversation about this:
