Matt Targett of Auburn swam this time Thursday during the SEC championships.

Just short of Cielo's US Open record (18.47).

Splits were 9.10/9.42.

!!

Oh - he split 18.10 on the 200 free relay.

I saw that on the SEC results too, but I'm pretty sure Cielo swam that 18.47 leading off the 200 freestyle relay at NCAA's last year. Still an incredible swim for Targett.

The USA, being rooted in so many things English, is still a country of non-metric measurements.

So short course yards dominates the winter season and all of NCAA swimming. They make an occasional exception in Olympic years to allow swimmers to earn qualifying times in meters.

I think it is long overdue for US swimming to begin a change to meters. At least get new pools built in short course meters. Train in whatever pools are available, but at least increase the frequency of racing in meters.

The upcoming Grand Prix meet in Austin will race SCY in prelims, LCM in finals. I think they want elites to get more LCM racing in before Worlds.
