Pretty good first day so far. Good swim by Casey in an incredibly fast 50 free field.

Would've liked to see a little more from the 200 freelay, but it probably wouldnt've pushed them into the A final, so hoping they bring it strong tonight.

4medley is looking great so far! 6th with 1 heat left. MIGHT sneak in.

Just missed out by .06. That's tough luck, great swim anyways.

1m Diving is about to start.

Looks like t.u. is not doing great. Probably didn't place as high in the relays as they would've liked, and Walters falling into the B final in the 50 hurts a little. If they don't make up serious ground in the 2 relays tonight, they're probably out of the NC hunt.

That Medley time was 2 seconds under the school record set last year at NCs (Denisyako, Jacobo, Duran, Gardner)

and Jason's leadoff split of 46.31 smashed the old school record of 46.69 set back in '01 (Riley Janes)

Yes the guys are swimming ON FIRE. Whatever they have done between the meet in Austin and now has really worked well.
Most of the teams are slower than their seed times. A few are just as fast...we are some of the very few who are swimming faster than seed times.
Way to go Jay & Doug!
I am pumped...both relays did AWESOME just to make it back...and the 400mr almost made finals! Great leadoff leg in backstroke! Casey swam within .05? of his best time (normally a time that would make it back for a night swim but this year is stupid fast in the 50 free).
Good luck to the divers...we have 3 competing...hopefully we'll have multiple guys back tonight.

Awesome 400 Medley. Smashed a school record set last year with 4 different guys.

1 up/1 down on diving. Great start to the day.

Amazing swims so far. Keep it up guys!

I noticed a Dwight Dumais from Stanford is in second in diving - any relation to the dumais brothers who dove for Texas about 10 years ago? No particular interest, just noticed the name.

Day 2:

If Boris & Jason can swim close to as fast as they did on the relay yesterday, there is a very good chance they'll both get second swims.

200 Medley has a shot at top 8, especially after the great 400 yesterday

Loncaric's swim was just sick. Great job!

Loncaric went out so fast. He was in 4th coming into the last 25. Was glad to see he held on to his 7th place ranking from the morning, often huge jumps in prelims like that come at the expense of a good showing in finals.

How about that 4x200 relay? I really wanted the kid from Arizona to catch t.u, but you could tell by his turn going into the last 50 that he was totally done. Probably the best 150 he's ever swam, though.

In the end, we finished 12th. I'm sure the coaches wanted higher, but we swam very well and were one of the few teams that swam BETTER at NCAA's than seeded.
We lose Sehn next year, which is a ton of points, but my "top secret underground connection" lets me know that we look to have a BIG recuiting class this year, so we should be stronger in swimming...probably a year (maybe two) before we can make up Sehn's points, but I think Jay & Doug have turned the corner with the team.
A good strong year of swimming, a couple of studs returning, and then you bring in a freshman class that has both a large number of swimmers and is very deep. That really sets the stage and helps you get good recruiting classes in the years after (provided you stay on top of things).

sprintermike, are there any names you can share? Once they've signed, I think it's probably ok to divulge. Haven't seen an article on aggieathletics yet. All the recruiting lists I've seen (ok, the one recruiting list I've seen) was not overwhelming, but swimming recruit info is usually probably not great.

Tough to see Eric go, but based on the performances of Cam and Grant, we could be ok in diving anyways. Eric had a tough go at NCAA's outside the 1m.

Excited to see if Boris can use his NCAA performance as a "springboard" (badacha!) into a great junior season. Going to definitely be a challenge to replace the sprint freestylers that we're losing.
sprintermike

I don't have any names, but I did hear times...I know there are at least 4 incoming freshmen with texas state finalist times (right around/under SR national times), with hopefully several more yet to committ. If there were 6 or more quality freshmen like this I would see it as a HUGE boost to the program, not just because of the swimmers, but it really helps future recruiting, as well as team cohesiveness (sp?).
I did inquire about why there were never any press releases for recruits (specifically mens), and was told that the last couple of years they were recruiting all summer and sometimes had people, especially foreign athletes, committ very late. They didn't want a press release saying they had two people coming when they were pretty sure they had four coming and two of the four were blue chip foreign recruits.

They only lose Clarke & Raiford. Still have Makany, Strange & Bergstrom, plus the addition of some in-state sprinters with 20.low/45.low speed to be developed. Mike's source is a good one

I saw finals Friday and Sat. Amazing swims and virtually a new American record every race. The swims that stand out in my mind are the 50.8 in the 100 breast! Taking out the 100 free in 19, taking out the 1650 in a 49. I can't remmeber the team but the 200 IM relay with a back split of 20. was freaking fast.

I had the opportunity to meet some A&M swimmers and all were first rate folks. Great job guys.

I was impressed with Auburn on several levels. Their swimmers were fired up and came to win. They were jacked up on Redbull the whole meet and loud. There fans were even louder. I thought the t-sips were flat.

What a great meet and a great venue. Hats of to the athletic department!

That is great news on the recruits. I'm anxious to see who they are.

One of the sickest swims at NCAAs had to be:

1 AUB 1:15.42 1:14.08N 40
1) Andkjaer, Jakob 2) r:+0.24 Louw, Gideon
3) r:+0.20 Norys, Kohlton 4) r:+0.17 Targett, Matt
r:+0.70 18.89 37.22 (18.33)
55.89 (18.67) 1:14.08 (18.19)

Other super swims:

Nathan Adrian's 40.23 split in the 400 medley relay. We will see a 39 soon in a 100 freestyle!

Adrian vs. Fiegen in the sprints. Great battles to come for two more years. Fiegen has far exceeded what I thought he would do (and I thought he'd do well).

Tyler Clary taking down Phelps' record in the 400 IM.

Must have been a great meet to watch. I wish I had been there to see it.
Incredible to see relays with Peirsol, Hansen, Crocker, and Walker lose their records.

Dumir Dugonjic's 50.8 breaststroke split in

I came over here to post about Cricket of all things. Spicewood, I didn't know you were a Swimming guy. I did three sports as a kid - Swimming, Soccer and Baseball. That was about all we had in my village in Saudi Arabia. Anyways, I was confused by this:
quote:
We will see a 39 soon in a 100 freestyle!
The 100 free WR is like 47 seconds at the moment. Even if you're talking yards, I don't see how you get to 39.

HollywoodBQ - The American record (they don't keep "world" records for non-metric swims) in the 100 hards free is 40.92 set in 2008.

The winning time this year was 41.02 - by a sophomore (Nathan Adrian). On the first night of the NCAAs he swam a 40.23 relay leg in the 400 medley relay. Jimmie Fiegen, a freshman at tu, swam a 41.49 100 free.

So I think a sub-40 second 100 free is very possible in the next few years. It is ridiculously fast - since these guys would be finished in that race when many solid swimmers would be taking their 3rd turn!

What Spicewood said, except that he meant the US Open record. The American record must be set by an American, whereas a US Open record can be set by anyone in the US. The US Open is really the "world record" in SCY events.

I'm sure you meant this Spicewood, just a freudian slip of the fingers.

Goblu - you are definitely correct. Good catch. The current NCAA record is also the US Open record - Cesar Cielo from Auburn via Brazil. Hopefully Nathan Adrian or Jimmie Fiegen can bring that record back to an American.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well, I dunno about Jimmy Feigen.

At some point, he's going to succumb to the "Austin culture", based on his history. I mean, if you thought Michael Phelps with a bong was bad...
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Goblu - I have heard the talk about Fiegen - but I'd say he did extremely well in his freshmen year. Dropped over half a second in his 50 and about three seconds in his 100. Incredible overall.

One other thing - the NCAA is relatively unforgiving about some extracurricular activities since the athletes are tested regularly. So perhaps Fiegen has adjusted to his new world and Austin isn't distracting him too much.
