U.S. Women Beat Argentina to Begin World Championships

Aug. 30, 2002

Riesa, Germany - Dominant blocking and a balanced attack were the key ingredients for the United States as it swept Argentina on the first day of the 2002 Women's Volleyball World Championships at Sachsen Arena Friday night.

Middle blocker Heather Bown led Team USA with 13 points, while middle blocker Danielle Scott and outside hitter Logan Tom added 12 points apiece.

Outside hitter Keba Phipps chipped in with 11 points in the 25- 21, 25-23, 25-21 victory, the first in Pool C for the Americans.

"I'm pleased with the success even though the result is quite close, closer than I expected," said Team USA head coach Toshi Yoshida. "Argentina presented a good team and has shown a top performance."

Bown (Yorba Linda, Calif./Hawai'i) had six kills, a match-high tying five blocks and a match-high two service aces. Scott (Baton Rouge, La./Long Beach State) had seven kills and five blocks, while Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah/Stanford) had six kills, five blocks and one service ace.

As a team, the United States out-blocked Argentina, 19-2.

"Yes! We won our first match," said Phipps, who led the United States with 10 kills and added one block. "It was a good team win, but we are able to play so much better. We must focus on improving."

Carolina Costagrande led Argentina with a match-high 15 points on 14 kills and one block. Michaela Vogel added eight points on six kills, one block and one ace, while Julietta Borghi posted seven points on seven kills.

"We played well as a team and for our first match I was very happy with our performance," said Tom. "Now we look ahead to our next opponent and put all our focus toward them. We have a long journey ahead and must take each day as it comes."

With one win in the books, the U.S. must now turn its focus to its next pool play match against the world's No. 1 team, Russia. The USA and Russia have played six matches against each other this year, with the Russians winning all of them.

"We came in a bit nervous. After all it's our first World Championship match," added USA team captain Tara Cross-Battle. "But then we settled down a bit and eventually won. There is still a lot of work ahead of us in order to prepare for the match versus Russia."
