I have been on the college tennis scene for almost 20 years and I never witnessed what I watched today.
Early on the first round match between Texas Tech and Washington looked like one of the biggest mismatches ever played. Tech won the doubles with little fanfare. The singles began and they quickly won at #1 and #2 in straight sets and in short order. It looked like a wipe out. 3-0 Tech and the Huskies were tired and out of it.
All of that changed at #6 singles. The Tech guy at six won the first set 6-1 and was at 5-3, 40-15 serving. He proceeded to lose that game and eventually the second set tiebreaker to split.
Now it is 3-0 Tech with all four remaining matches going to a fourth set. The Red Raiders never challenged again. U Dub won every third set in a runaway to win the match.
It was the biggest collapse I have ever seen in college tennis. I felt really badly for Tim Segal. He is a good coach and a friend and is one of the good guys in college tennis.
His team looked like a group that was seriously going to challenge Texas on Saturday. I still cannot believe it.
Wow, what a start to the tournament.
