I was looking at the rosters today for more background on Porscha.

I was shocked to see how large these rosters are. The men's team has 70 names. The women's team has 53 names.

The men have to split 12.6 scholarships and the women 18.

Can I assume a huge percentage of these athletes are walk-ons?

Are these kids coming to A&M on their own funds because they want to train and compete for Henry?

Yes to your question and also the scholarships are split seven ways to Sunday as well.

If the scholarships were split evenly the men would have on average 0.18 scholarships each. About $4500 if a scholarship is worth $25K. I assume some athletes get a good bit more, and many even less or zero.

it is limited by the NCAA how many scholarships you can give per sport. Every school gives the same number.

The scholarship limits are set by the NCAA. No matter how much money A&M has they cannot give more scholarships.

Money does affect roster size. It costs money to train, equip, cover travel, etc. for each athlete so our large roster says something about the commitment to track.

Add: more money could mean more funded sports, subject to Title IX. Stanford fields many more sports than we do - or anyone else in the Big 12. I think they also spend a bit less on football in favor of more sports.

There is also a pecking order for multi-sport athletes. So if an athlete plays football and runs track, his scholarship counts as football.

A partial scholarship can't be any less than 25% of a full ride. So, four ways to Sunday at worst...

TXag2011.... scholarships can and are split many ways including books only, part tuition and part anything..... which is must less than 25 percent. much less that 4 ways to Sunday.

This is true. They can be less than 25%.

I know a Big12 champion swimmer at tu who had just books for several semesters. He never had more than 1/2 of a scholarship and that was just for one or two semesters. He said it varied year by year and semester by semester. If they were recruiting someone who "needed" more money, they would scrounge around for fractions here and there.

I assume this happens at A&M too.

I absolutely don't mean to sound an ass here...but, you need to go talk to your friend again...or realize the NCAA scholarships rules have changed over the past few years.

Rule 15.3.3 from the D-I handbook...

There are exceptions that could allow your friend to have a semster long scholarship the first go around, but after that...he'd have to have a year long contract.



Scholarships do indeed change year to year for almost every athlete not on a full ride (and even they will lose them)...they have to be renewed year to year. But, they can't change by semester.
