He tees off at 8:50 on # 10 on Thursday
Playing partners are Craig Bowden in his 5th US Open, and Chris Kirk in his 2nd US Open.
Here's to hoping he makes the cut!

Don't forget Andrew Parr. One under after one. Not often you see an Aggie on top of the US Open Leader board. Golf channel just mentioned how good the Texas A&M golf program has become.

Conditions look hard out there at Bethpage today so far.

Just getting around without blowing up today and ruining his chance to make the cut could be a "good" day.

Agreed. And starting on 10 like Bronson did just makes matters worse.

First tee shot of the day... a forced carry of 270 yards to a narrow fairway, in the rain and wind. If you can pull that shot off, you get to hit a 200 yard second shot to a green surrounded by rough and deep bunkers.

If the conditions stay like this, I wonder if anyone gets in the clubhouse at -1 or better.

Rain Delay. Looks like it could be a long one. The Farmingdale, NY forecast is for rain all day.

I'm pretty sure Berman has done the US Open in the past. He and Tirico usually split shifts. I don't mind him but I can certainly see how he would annoy others.

+2 through 3 on 10, 11, 12 will be about par for the field today. I wonder where Bronson was on the par 5 13th when the delay came.

I forsee Burgoon turning it around after the delay, and he finishes at either E or +1 after Day 1 which should have him in good shape with these conditions

If he could pull off a 70 or 71 today, that would be insanely good. He'd be no worse than 1 or 2 back.

They are done for the day. USGA suspends play until Friday morning.

This may be a good thing for our fellow Ag. He got a taste of the worst Bethpage has to offer right off the bat. Hopefully, it will only be easier for him out there so he can settle in and play his game tomorrow.

The open date needs to be changed to the Fall so that other courses in the South and Southwest can host the tournament. Southern Hills does not count in my opinion. It is not that great a course. The USGA has had their heads up their butts for a long time on the schedule. Too many fine courses are not able to compete because of the Summer solstice time.

HoustonAg....sorry you missed it!

The 1969 U.S. Open was played at the Cypress Creek Course of the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas. Moody won by one stroke over three other golfers with a 72-hole score of 281. Deane Beman, Al Geiberger and Bob Rosburg all finished the tournament with a score of 282

TX AG,

I know it well for I was there and now a member at Champions. After that and few other southern courses USGA complained about the heat. The south or southwest is now out of consideration.

Champions has also hosted the PGA, Ryder Cup, Nabisco, Tour Championship, US Amateur, etc.

Do y'all think Champions is still an Open-level course? I've played out there a few times and I love it. But I don't know if it has the teeth for an Open.

On that note, I'm not really sure if any Texas course has the teeth for an Open. I guess the ones that would pop into my head would be:

Whispering Pines (not practical because of location)
Shadow Hawk
Crown Colony (see Whispering Pines)
Carlton Woods (never played it)
Dallas National (never played it)

The southwest course I'd like to see get consideration is the Oak Tree Golf Club Mens Course. I've played it a few times and it's brutal. If they tipped it out, grew the rough up, dried the fairways and greens and the Oklahoma winds blew, a double digit over par winning score would be possible.

They played the Senior Open (or Senior PGA, I don't remember which) out there a few years ago. They played most of the holes from the 2-ups in mostly benign conditions and the winning score was around 5-under.

Surely there is a course in Texas that could be brought to Open standards since they would have years to get ready....don't they name the course something like 6 or 8 years in advance?
I have only been on the Champions Course once...that was in '69 at the Open. Moody played his way into the Open that year via sectional qualifying....he was probably the last winner to get in by sectional qualifying. "Sarge died last year". I have not
played in 45 years or more so my knowledge is of courses is very limited...but still love
the game.

Pecan Valley in San Antonio might be able to. It is about 7100 yds from the tips, so they would have to lengthen it some. It is a great track. I would think Champions could. What about DAC?
Deluxe
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
True. I guess they'd have a few years to get it ready.

I've played Pecan Valley and I'm not sure if that course is Open tough. But I haven't been out there in about 8 years. So maybe I just don't remember it well enough.

I haven't played either course at DAC but I've heard good things. Aren't both courses Nicklaus designs?

There are several courses that handle the open. Champions can easily handle it as well. What makes the US open the US open is the fairway widths and the rough. Much more difficult then any other tournament.

Some courses do not care to host these tournament due to the impact on the members.

That is why so many are played on public links courses.
Deluxe

There are definitely private clubs whose members don't want to host big tournaments. Pine Valley comes to mind. I heard rumors that Champions members didn't want the Tour Championship anymore either, but I'm not sure if that's true.

I can't speak to the condition of Pecan Valley, but the drive that takes you there would have to be completely re-built. Talk about thinking you are in the slums.
