I would really like to know what the benchmark would be if Ben Hogan had not been in that bus accident. But given that the bus accident DID happen, yea, Tiger is the best of all time.

Best of all time as far as I'm concerned, although in my book, he's still gotta take down Jack's major record before I consider his name actually "engraved" as the best of all time. It's still in revocable status at this point.

It would have been interesting to see what Hogan would have done if not for the bus crash. Also, the guy pretty much never played in the British Open (won the only one he did enter), didn't play in many PGA Championships either, and lost several years of majors due to WWII. Would have been interesting to see his major totals if all that had been different. The guy won 9 out of 18 majors at one point - and the majority of that time was post bus crash.

What Bob said.

Would like to say Tiger, but what if he gets in a bus accident and never breaks Jack's records? Then can we say he's the best?

Also, makes one wonder how Jack, Hogan, Jones, et al would've played with Big Bertha drivers, laser weighted golf balls, and bow flexes.

I doubt it would have made much a difference as the courses are much longer now.

Also they were competing up against players using the same tools, so would have made little difference in their stats

Interesting you write "bus accident". Hogan's ability to do what he did after a near fatal head-on with a bus...yeah, I'd like to see if Tiger could do that.

Also, can you believe that even though he won the first three legs of the Grand Slam in 1953, Hogan couldn't play in PGA, because it overlapped the dates of the British Open. So while he was winning the British Open, the PGA started up. What kind of dumb@sses were running golf back then?

Bingo.

Equipment means close to nothing in a discussion like this.
