Does anyone know why some of our athletes are listed as "unattached" on the results sheet?

Very often freshmen will run unattached in case the coaches decide to redshirt them for that particular season. I believe multi's All American Trinity Otto competed unattched because he is out of indoor elegibility, but does have one year of outdoor left.

hurdledog-Interesting. How does the eligibility in track work with indoor vs. outdoor?

really enjoyed the meet. It's good to see indoor track season is back. Can't wait for the jan. and feb. meets.

Indoor and outdoor are treated as separate seasons; you can redshirt one and compete in the other in the same year.

But, as we saw in the Greg Paulus situation, let's say Trinity redshirted 2 years of outdoor. He would only have 1 year of eligibility left, right?

(I know he doesn't, just trying to fully understand the rule).

Right, unless you get a medical redshirt for one of the seasons, you have 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility. A distance runner could redshirt a different season over 3 years between cross country, indoor, and outdoor.

Once an athlete starts college, the 5 year clock starts, and doesn't stop except for medical reasons (Katy Doyle missed a couple of seasons for Tommy-John surgery, but came back with one year left due to her medical redshirt and won NCAAs in the javelin), military obligations, or mission trips (BYU typically has 23-24-25 year olds on their team).

And as for the "unattached," early-bird meets aside, indoors doesn't really get started until January, with the bigger meets in February. Until an athlete travels with the team, there's no point to run a freshman in uniform, especially this early.
