yep. Not that I watch a bunch of tennis, but it amazes me how a #1 plays a #3 in the semis, etc. It makes no sense.

Tennis seeds are meant to get the better players through the early rounds and not so much strict pairing in the later rounds. You simply want a seed or a seed in a relative region.

One reason I like the randomness is that you're not likely going to get much redundancy.

Also, with the different surfaces and different types of games, I do not know if 1 plays 3 instead of 4 really has any impact on anything. (Don't the grand slams, atleast, use a coin flip to place 3 and 4?)

in most tennis tournaments, after the top 2 seeds, the remaining seeds are assigned randomly, many times actually drawn out of a bag or hat.

1 seed always on top, 2 seed always on bottom
3 and 4 seeds get randomly assigned to a half
5-8 seeds are randomly assigned to a quarter
9-16 seeds are randomly assigned to an eighth
17-32 seeds are randomly assigned to a sixteenth

this is just how it's always been done. since the computer-generated rankings fluctuate so gradually, but also so frequently, there is really no reason to have such rigid seeding guidelines.

One addition: 9-12 seeds are paired up with 5-8 in the round of 16, while 13-16 seeds are paired up with 1-4.

This is a great point. Without it, you could see the same draws, or almost same draws, over and over and over and overrrrr. Could get dull.
