Any thoughts on the first day?

I was stunned at how bad the Auburn women's 800 free relay was, adding 15 seconds from a year ago with three of the same girls. They would have been SIXTH at Big 10's with that 7:09 they threw on the board. Wow. Just wow.

Totally impressed by the Tennessee 200 medley. Beat a lot of teams with more lauded swimmers on them and swam a darn fast time.

Look like the Auburn-Florida men's race will be a fun one to watch.

Ava Ohlgren and Caitlin Geary swam poorly in their dual with tu. It looks like Ohlgren is having a poor season. A 1:48 200 free is completely ordinary.

The Auburn women are big time in trouble. They're looking at a third place finish.

Forgive him apo, he's a rookie.

But yeah, that is really impressive. I don't know what to think anymore.

After NCAA's, I'm going to run a completely unscientific statistical analysis, because it's going to be the first real meet where there will be a good chance to compare this year vs. last year.

We're going to be posting daily recaps of the big conference meets on the site (http://www.theswimmerscircle.com) every night, so if anyone wants to see a good summary, be sure to log on there. Yesterday, we mostly just took them off of the team site's because there were only 1 or 2 races each, but we'll be putting up better recaps from here on out.

Nice 50 free prelim for the Auburn men...that will keep them up with Florida following today at least.

Looks like Micah Lawrence, from Austin-Pflugerville, dropped the hammer in 100 breast prelims - 59.89.

She doesn't always swim well in finals but it could be a great time later today.

Agreed. Very nice time out of her.

Their misery in the 200 free continues though - not a single A finalist.

Anybody notice how Kristen Heiss's Nov. invite time in the 500 nearly won SEC's (off by only .03)?

Heiss' swim at the Houston Invite was absolutely amazing. I know I certainly didn't expect her to be THAT fast that early in the season, not sure if anyone else did.

Then again, the SEC isn't really known for their distance swimmers as much as their sprinters...If I had to guess, the Georgia distance swimmers hardly rested at all (knowing they had the top 3 spots, or at least 3 out of 4, plus NCAA cuts wrapped up), and will certainly go a lot faster in March. As a point of reference, Schmitt went a faster time in their December-rest meet than she did yesterday.

Still love Heiss as the favorite at NCAA's, I think she's going to be way too driven to not win it as a senior. But it's going to take a heck of a lot faster than a 4:38 to do it.

4:39 won the Big Ten and 4:41 won the Big East.

The Georgia girls and Heiss are now four of the top five in the country and the only ones under 4:40 (outside of the Big Ten winner)...I'd say the SEC is doing OK at the distances...Schmitt's was only off by a few hundreths while the other two were faster...I highly doubt they completely swam through SEC's...
