The Men's Volleyball Club team won the National Collegiate Club Championship this past weekend. The team beat the University of Colorado in the semi-finals and the University of Florida in the final.

Additionally, the Women's Club team won the National Championship as well.

Awesome. We never got a national champ when I played but we always competed well.

Congrats to both the men's and women's teams!

I may be off base here, but it's surprising to me that we didn't have to beat a California team on the way to the title. Isn't men's volleyball huge there?

It is huge there, but several of the California schools actually have NCAA teams, and not club teams. Stanford, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine and several others have NCAA teams. However, there aren't a ton of NCAA men's volleyball teams, so the club sport level is actually pretty high. Same thing in Men's soccer, water polo, and several others.

^^^Which is why it's so funny that the University has really dropped the hammer on them. They've severely limited the trademarks that the teams can use on their shirts, and everywhere they print their name they now have to designate "club" instead of "team".

Believe it or not, there are a few Universities who actually see club sports as a positive for the school, and sometimes they even have links to the club sports site from the official athletics site. At A&M, the University seems to take that nationwide representation for granted, and really makes efforts to distance themselves from the clubs.

I think the best part is winning the title, period. "tu" should have nothing to do with it.

Let the women's club team play LC's bunch for the right to represent us in the B12.

^^^Hate to break it to you, but the Varsity squad would win.

Not saying there isn't a player or two who couldn't challenge for a roster spot, if they were willing to put in the work. But, LC's group would win.

goblu, A&M is known nationally as a place that supports student groups as well as any.

BTW, I'm on a club team that simply uses "team" all over the place and we get along just fine.

Which universities link to the club teams off their varsity athletics websites?

2011, they just decreed that this year. Check with your adviser, because apparently they're pretty serious about it.

Yes, recsports supports it's groups very well. The rest of the University, however, doesn't, IMO.

I can't remember which schools. I've just come across them from time to time. If I see one, I'll post it on here.

There are 2 former varsity players on both of the girl's teams, which the max per Club Sports' Rules. As for JC vs the girl's teams, honestly our girls are about as good as it gets for the club level; but, they would get beat by the Varsity team.

Any former alumni that would like to get more involved with the club should join the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=43655048155#/group.php?gid=43655048155) or stop by the website at http://mensvolleyball.tamu.edu/.

Our guys played great and beat some talented teams on the way to the finals. (UCLA lost in the semi finals to Florida for that California connection you were looking for...ofc Baylor beat UCLA too and A&M beat Baylor)

The Tournament MVP was OH Jason Fellman from A&M, and we had 3 other All Americans: Jon Olson (S), Brett Wolfe (OH/RS), and Keith Anderson (L) Everyone played out of their minds

I was working at the tournament-there was a lot of longhorns on staff as well and I can tell you they were not happy at all about hearing the War Hymn 3 times (the womens teams won the div. 1 and div. 2 titles)

Well the Texas guys were a good team, but they're too emotional and get caught up in that sort of play. They can play out of their mind or get beat by anyone because they live on emotion. The A&M guys do a great job of keeping each other level headed and playing with consistency and that's why they won.

What sort of job did you have at the tournament? Ref? Convention Center Official? NCCS?

I've gotten a chance to watch quite a few different club sports since starting at A&M, and this actually seems to be the bug-a-boo of a lot of their teams. They have great talent and can play incredibly well and beat anyone, but if you get them frustrated they just fall apart. Especially against the Ags.
