That falls in the category of a really bad loss.

Neb was ranked 49th coming into that match...I stand corrected we shouldn't expect to beat the number 49th team in the nation..nothing to see here folks move along.

Could we possibly keep this on tennis and avoid two posters hogging the thread? Thanks.

Well, apparently you and your friend want to talk about each other, and I'd just as soon not see it on a tennis thread. Trade e-mail addresses and really insult each other. Thanks.

The match today was a surprise in that NU beat us without breaking much of a sweat. I know those things happen, but it's surprising none-the-less. That's what I'd like to talk about.

pretty spot on bigfoot. Consistently having to count on the top 3 singles and the doubles point to win any match is setting up for failure in the long run. Sure you can make a run on a top team when you have 3 girls ranked in singles and a top 30 doubles team, but all it takes is one bad night and you can lose to anyone.

With that being said, coach k's future is really up in the air and i wouldn't be surprised either way what happens. The best solution out there is to figure out how to clone naz five times over...

A loss to #49 and a loss to t.u on Tuesday ain't gonna help the ranking. We're going to need to win a tough away match at Colorado and a round in the Big XII, probably a difficult rematch against Oklahoma, just to get into the NCAAs.

If you can't teach heart, then you've gotta recruit heart (or at least talent!). Like you say Bigfoot, his JOB DESCRIPTION is to lead 18-21 year-old girls and the fact that he he is held accountable for the effort of others...again, that is part of a coach's job and that's why he gets paid the big bucks.

I imagine that recruiting passionate athletes is something that is much more difficult to do for women's coaches than men's. Of course, there's plenty of Morgan Franks out there who you KNOW they're playing hard. But I feel like for guys, they're much more likely to wear that passion outwardly, whereas the gals might be more reserved about it when they're in high school, trying to play it cool and all, or being worried about a thousand other things. For boys, it seems more "acceptable" to make their sport their primary life focus, and so they tend to do it.

I've never recruited high school tennis players, so I don't know that it's a fact, but it's something I've noticed in swimming, at the least.

Go watch a Pac-10, SEC, or ACC women's match and you will see plenty fire. Or think back to Roland, Walker, Lubinsky, Foster, Mechem, Blagodarova, or Clifford. Could anyone ever question if those girls wanted to win? This current group, with the exception of Morgan, Nazari, and sometimes Elze, is just below average when it comes to competing.

I think Olivier is also a heck of a competitor...short on talent but long on heart. As unathletic as she is and as poor as her technique is, it is amazing that she can win a high-level D1 college match at all. I'm not trying to knock her at all. On the contrary, I respect how she does as much as she can with what she's got.

I think the problem with our 4-6 isn't so much heart as it is the fact that they're just not very good - at least not good enough to play 4-6 on a top-25 team.

As a whole, I think our team is also very unfit. Most of the girls are either overweight or just soft. The Roland, Spencer, Walker, Mechem teams LOOKED like they took their fitness seriously. They weren't all 6' Sharapova amazons, but they were all lean and looked like college athletes. I don't know how much that affects their play - after all Marion Bartolia and Serena at times look like buffaloes and they do just fine on the tour. I doubt it helps though.

its womens tennis line 4-6 is probably really bad tennis...not hard to win down there at those lines.

Right, but my point was that I wonder if it's tough to recognize that passion when recruiting 17 year old girls.

Which is especially surprising, because her dad is a coach.

I always think the same thing, but it is not all that uncommon. Remember, Nicki Mechem's dad was a teaching pro and her technique was awful. She won on smarts and heart, but she did not hit a pretty ball.

I haven't watched much women's tennis over the last several years, but I did watch the Texas game last night on the Internet for a while. What I noticed is a few girls for the Ags really just tanked their third sets once their serve was broken and didn't seem to be playing with much passion or desire to win. That was troubling, especially against a rival on your home court. BK has been struggling for years to field a elite program, and it's probably time Byrne started to re-evaluate the women's program. We should be a lot better than we've shown the last few years.

The program is a waste of scholarship money.
