Who's going?

Kids want to go, torn between nets and softball.

That's going to be a tough call. If it helps any, the tennis match means more in terms of the LSS than the softball game, and is between two top 10 teams. The softball game will be shorter, if your kids have lacking attention spans.

Matches were a lot closer than the final team score indicates, 4 went to three sets in singles. Number 1 doubles was a match up of two top 6 teams nationally and was single break match. Expect both teams to meet again in Big XII tournament final and both to make deep runs in the NCAA.

You've made some quality posts about tennis on a few threads, but that one is a swing and a miss. No offense, but you're wrong about that one. Denton wanted to win this one just as much as anyone.

Thats fine I can understand...but I feel its an honest question...Think about if you were the coach of sip teams playing against the Aggies could you root for your team the sips.....

They talked about this on the Louie Bellina show about Van Malone one time....I just don't like having sip coaches...just my opinion..

fwiw, Denton is a sip...Texas '79 and in their hall of fame. I do not think that factored into this match, at all. He wanted this as much as anyone would have wanted it.

You're wrong Bigfoot.

Denton in order to coach at TAMU CC he had to have a degree and earned it at TAMU CC...So wouldn't that make him a alum of A&M CC?

UT's best tennis player doesn't even hold a degree from there...It should say AM CC 2008 on his aggie athletic bio. snicker

so whenever a football player or a basketball player goes pro before they graduates you don't consider them an alum??

Although technically I think an alum is any former student, in practice it only counts if you graduate...that's why Texas A&M has a former students association, not an alumni association, because we wanted to include all former students.

Anyways, I think someone who spent the majority of their college at one school, even if they finished somewhere else because of circumstances (like a pro sports career) prevented them from graduating their counts as part of their alumni base.

the guy earned his degree from A&M Corpus is he not an alum from there???

If you notice former football players come back to A&M to finish their degree here not other universities...get it?

So if a regular student went three years to TX A&M flunked out got a degree from UTSA you would have no problem him calming he is a former student from A&M? interesting...It's posted incorrectly on the Aggie-athletics.com page.

quote:
Denton Texas Ties…Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton was a former All-American at Texas and led the Longhorns to a 78-27 (.743) team record and a Southwest Conference title from 1976-79. He compiled an 85-22 career record in singles and a 72-18 career record in doubles. Denton, who was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 2006, graduated from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 1998, while serving as the Director of the HEB Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. “I played at Texas for four years, but opted to leave college early and play the pro circuit. I promised my mom I would go back and earn my degree – I just didn’t know it would be in my 40’s,” Denton said. “I have many fond memories from my time at Texas, but since I’ve been at A&M, I’ve fallen in love with Aggieland. Everyone has been great to me and my family here. I’ve had so much support and been given the resources to be able to build our program into what we have in place now. It’s definitely an exciting time to be an Aggie.”

I certainly do not believe he is in love with A&M he would jump ship to TU in a heart beat.

All my opinion...flame away.

You're confusing me. First, you say he's loyal to Texas because he played there. Then you say "ha ha ha, he graduated from TAMU-CC, so he's not really a sip anyway." So which is it?

Bottom line, the guy gets his paycheck from A&M, not Texas or TAMU-CC. I highly doubt he'd put his career on the line so that a few kids in the program he used to play for can win a regular season match over A&M. He's helped put your program in the top 10, and you're questioning his loyalty?

Denton wants to win every match. That's stupid to think he wouldn't care about losing to Texas.

If you could read I am questioning his loyalty its human nature...Again this was a topic discussed on Louie's show about van malone it makes sense if you think about it......

About his degree more of a funny thing he actually isn't an official alum of Texas yet that's what it says in his bio on our athletic homepage...and I think its funny he is the sips best tennis player ever and he isn't actually a graduate of Texas.

So Darrell Royal, since he played for and graduated from Oklahoma, tu's longtime rival, didn't really try to beat them when he was coaching tu?

That's ridiculous.

If you have ever had a conversation with Denton, then you know that he wants to win every match he plays. Whenever they beat Texas last year I don't think I had seen him happier after a match. Denton is a competitor, has been successful his whole life in the game a tennis (I was really impressed with his pro accomplishments); he will always want to win.

I'm gonna disagree bigfoot, I really don't think he would leave. He has turned the men's team around in a few years, and I think they will stay a top 10 team as long as he is here

Denton is a good coach and I doubt there is any team that he'd rather beat more than Texas.
He and Bob McKinley are a real solid combo for us. I think we're just going to get better.

What's funny about it? Many (maybe even most) of the best college athletes ever are not actually graduates of any school, let alone the one they played for. Does that mean fans of that school can't root for them as professionals or that an athlete can't claim to be an alumnus of that school? (FYI, most dictionaries define "alumnus" as a graduate OR former student of a school.)

You're going to have to disown a hell of a lot of Aggies if you're going to say that one has to graduate from a school before he can be considered a product of that school.

Larry Fitzgerald is one of the best Pitt football players ever, and he's apparently getting his degree from the University of Phoenix. You think Pitt fans should stop rooting for him because his diploma isn't going to say "University of Pittsburgh?"
