Women' get a first round bye

Women play OU (assuming win over Kansas) in round 2. We beat OU 4-0 in Norman, including a sweep of doubles. Winner of that gets Baylor...ouch. If we can get to the Baylor match, I'd be happy. That at least would give us a shot at a regional 3 seed, and we're certainly capable of beating a #2 seed to advance at the tourny.

Men play Ok. St in first round, who we crushed 7-0 last time out in C-stat. Only loss was at #2 doubles. After that, we get a likely rematch with Baylor. I don't know that we thump them 6-1 like last time, but I think it's still a win. That sets us up for another matchup with t.u. Don't be fooled by the 7-0 loss last time, if the Ags and Horns meet in the championship, it will be a dogifght. t.u. has looked really good this year, and I'd expect a deep run by them at NCAA's, but it's a rivalry match in a championship, and we certainly have the quality to play with them at almost every line, so it's going to be a tough matchup.

Just so we're all clear... Victories at 7-0 or 6-1 mean that we'll win the next meeting, too. But a 7-0 loss doesn't mean anything... the rematch will be a dogfight!

The women do not stand a prayer of beating a number two seed.

At no point did I say we were going to win
this time BECAUSE we won 7-0 and 6-1. I was simply stating the results for the sake of history. We're going to beat Ok. St. Baylor will be a tough match, but they haven't been playing as well as they've been ranked, so I think that we beat them too.

Just so we're clear, us beating Ok. St. 7-0 is not the same as us losing to t.u. 7-0. One happened because we're far and away a better team, the other happened because we had a bad day. I'm not saying the loss happened because we had a bad day, but the 7-0 loss happened because we had a bad day.

Yeah, we get it, you hate Bobby. But yes, they do. They beat no. 14 Arkansas this year. Lost a closs 4-3 match to Clemson. They still have a top 3 that can play with anybody in the country. You really don't think that they "do not stand a prayer" against a no. 17-32 team (give or take) in the country? Really?

I guess it's my fault for even taking the time to respond to your posts anymore.

Whats the deal on here you can't criticize Bobby K??? Yes they beat Arkie but the way they're playing I doubt they have a good shot to go far in the postseason..

No, trust me, I have absolutely no problem criticizing coaches. You'll see I've done it on several swimming threads.

What kills me is when someone develops such a deep-seeded hatred for a coach that it leaves them incapable of having any reasonable discussion of that team beyond "they suck". Clearly, the girls have the ability to knock off the second seed in a regional. Wouldn't give them better than a 50% chance, but I'd put it about 35%, depending on who they're playing.

I, frankly, think that Bobby has done a pretty terrible job thus far this year, based on how well they played at the end of last season and then how poorly they played this season. But some of these guys have tried to turn these into Rivalries board type discussions, only replace "Dallas" or "Tech" with "Bobby".

Thanks for the bracket. I'm looking forward to it. I expect the men to be back up against the sips for the title and the women to put up a fight against Baylor before going down. Should be an all-around sight to see.

Aside from making sure to get a first-match win, I'm really curious to see what Bobby does with his lineups. Nazari is probably safely into the singles draw. Elze is right on the cusp. So I wonder if he slots her down to the 3 line, to give her a better chance of winning and making sure she stays in the singles draw.

In doubles, Elze/Naz are looking good to be in. Interestingly, Morgan, who's been playing with Stephanie for the majority of the spring, is actually the no. 68 ranked doubles team with Lauren, who she went 4-1 with, including an 8-5 win over Elze/Naz in the fall.

Someone who's more familiar with the college system will have to help me out with this, but if they were doing so well, why split them up? I guess Lauren has had some injury problems, but isn't she past that? And what are the odds that he teams them back up for the Big 12 Champs to try and move them up a few spots/get them ready for NCAA's, and can they even do that?

Moving Elze down to 3 for a couple of matches would do next to nothing to help her move up/stay up in the rankings.

As far as doubles teams, the guys are in the same situation with Lunt/Grigorov being ranked for most of the season, even though they haven't played together in a long time. It would be unwise to mess with your doubles continuity and jeopardize your TEAM'S chances to win a match just to get an individual doubles team in the tournament. If their current ranking gets them in, fine. But it would be reckless to change doubles teams during the team tournaments just to get them
in to individuals.

I see your point. But what if you're in a situation like our women will be against Baylor, where they don't really have much of a hope of winning the match? The girls haven't really had much stability in their lineup all season either way.

Just asking. Is it within a coach's right, in college tennis, to risk the team's success in a match that they have maybe a 5% chance of winning (and maybe a 4% chance if he swaps around the lineup) for the sake of individual players? Is that an ethical thing to do?

While moving a player lower in the lineup will (in theory) give a player a better chance to win their individual match, it also gives them
less of a chance to move up in the rankings. You get fewer ranking points for beating a lesser player. Why do you think players who go 12-1 at line 6 are never ranked in the top 50 while players who go 10-3 at line 1 or 2 are? Unless you are beating other ranked players, you won't move up the computer rankings.

In short, you are better off playing in the higher spot and getting a higher reward (points wise) for a better win than winning lower and picking up fewer points. Obviously if the other team were to have a weird situation where a lower ranked player is higher on the team, that would complicate things, but we're talking about on averge.

Plus, it would just be unethical to make a deliberate change like that. Plus it might get protested and you piss off the other coaches. Plus you're talking about messing with the minds of your 2 and 3 player going in to the tournament by making them play a line they've maybe never played all season.

No good reason to make a move like that, in my opinion. If you want another girl in the individual tournament you should have been working on that all year. Don't try to play games at the last minute.

Yeah I understand all of that, but I was mostly referring to the doubles teams.

Now if a player is hurt or you KNOW that another team is going to stack, then that changes the thinking on switching lines.

Well then, like I said.

And if they're playing a team where they only have a 4% chance to win, what makes you think that the doubles team who hasn't played together in months would win a match?

I think we all know exactly how you meant it. My post was a joke. Notice the wink (and yes, I see yours in your reply).

Men beat OSU 4-0.

Women beat OU 4-2. 5/6 in A&M lineup is just gross. How can they give out 8 scholarships and not find 6 girls that give effort?

Hey, they won. Let's enjoy that for today. Big matches against Baylor (women) and likely Baylor (men.)

Technically it was 6 this year with Janelle's injury. But still good to get the win. Still a good win against a no. 5 seed. BTHO Baylor!

Naz, Elze, Christi, Stephanie, Sheri, Janelle, Morgan, Turpin is 8. Lauren and Amo are not on scholarships. Is that not right?

Looks right to me. Was simply saying that we're really only working with 6 scholarship players this year.

Yeah, typical t.u. to screw up something so simple as a link...

Ags are looking good to take the doubles point 7-5, 8-7, and 7-7.

t.u. took the doubles point in the other semi, but isn't looking ALL that great against Tech. Lost the first set at 1-3 lines, is losing at 2, won the first set at 4-6.

They'll probably beat tech, but I like our odds in the finals (knock on wood) if they play like that at the top.

Dadamo took the first set at 2. Austin and Griggy are both up 5-4, Hoover up 5-3 at 6, Alberto lost first set at the 5 line 2-6, Klegou's down 3-5.

Ags win first set at 1, 2, 3, 6, lose at 4, 5.
