So, the outdoor championships are this weekend. It seems we had a good first day with our decathalon and heptathlon athletes doing well and our frosh javelin thrower winning 1st for the guys.

I'm just a casual observer. I was wondering if some of you had some projections on how we should do. Obviously our women are expected to win, but the guys have yet to win a conference championship under Henry. What will it take to change that?

I want National Titles.

I'm not expert but something about how conference meets are scored vs national title meets hampers our chances of winning or has in the past.

I think conference meets favor depth, national meets favor talent, and who has the most of it. Could be wrong though

Pilot and Smitty you are both somewhat correct.

The scoring for both meets is the same. 10 for first, 8 for 2nd, 6 for 3rd, 5 for 4th, 4 for 5th, 3 for 6th, 2 for 7th and 1 for 8th, but the reason why you may not see us do as well in the conference meet is because our top runners who will get 10 points in the Big 12 championship and would get 10 points at the National level, are not rewarded any more even though they blow their competition out of the water.

Essentially at the conference level you score less points by just having the number 1 finisher as compared to a team who has runners come in 4th, 5th and 6th. While our number one would still get points at the national level and has already qualified for that meet, the 4th, 5th and 6th scorers at the conference meet likely have no chance to make it to the national level.

So depth does matter, but the truth is that we have a lot of depth and very talented depth. We have a shot to win the Big 12 championship, but honestly we may have a better chance to win the National Championship... as odd as that may sound.

The conference level also somewhat punishes you for not being as well rounded. We don't have great shot putters or discus throwers. Nor do we do well at the distance runs. Other schools in our conference that focus more on those distances have a chance to pick up big points although at the national level, they likely won't qualify to compete. If our look at our sprinters, we will dominate the sprints, much as we would at the national level, but we may not be as well rounded as some other teams.

Gaby Mayo pulled up limping in the 100 and then removed herself from the 200. I hope she is OK

Gaby pulled something. That hurts both her and the team.

Here's how we look:

Men

Points already Scored:

Decathlon: 6
Javelin: 11
Long Jump: 5

Projected points based on Prelims and Current Rankings:

Hammer: 0
Shot Put: 0
Discus: 0
Pole Vault: 0
High Jump: 0
400m: 17
110H: 0
400H: 0
10,000m: 0
5,000m: 0
1,500m: 0
100m: 9
200m: 17
4x100m: 10
4x400m: 10

Not sure:

Tripple Jump: ?
Steeple Chase: ?

Things can change. For example, Henry qualified 3rd in the 400m, but should finish first in the finals. We also don't know what to expect from the tripple jumpers. This is usually a strong event for us, but injuries and inconsistency have made it hard to predict.

Did I leave anything out?

Never mind my question. I answered it by checking out the results myself.

Does that mean that we failed to qualify anyone for finals in Hammer, Shot Put, Discuss, Pole Vault, High Jump, 110H, 400H, 10,000m, 5,000m, & 1,500m or have they not been held yet?

Yes & No -- They are not all finished but we will not earn any points in these 10 events on the Men's side.

The 110H, 400H, & 1500m finals will run tomorrow. We failed to qualify anyone for the finals in these three events. We finished 10th in the 110H. We did not enter anyone in the 400H or 1500m events.

The Hammer Throw, Shot Put, Pole Vault, and 10,000m have been completed. We earned zero points in these four events. We finished 9th in the Pole Vault, 12th in the Hammer Throw, and 11th in the Shot Put. We did not enter the 10,000m.

The Discus Throw, High Jump, and 5000m events are Sunday. There were no prelims for these events. We are entered in all three events, but it would be a huge upset if we earned any points in these events.
