DAY 4 - Saturday

The Ags are doing incredibly well. If the WOMEN do not drop the baton more than once, we should win. However, the MEN are in for a close one.

If the MEN can get 18 points in the relays and 13 points in the 200m, we will win. Extra points in the 200m and long jump are possible and will be necessary to offset lower point totals in the relays if they occur. I am afraid that we might not get the 18 points in the relays – the 400m runners have not had a good meet so far.

Prior to the meet, the Track & Field News projected the following final results:
MEN: Florida 69 and A&M 67
WOMEN: A&M 61 and Oregon 60

After the results of three days of competition, the PROJECTIONS heading into the final day of competition now stand at:
MEN: A&M 67 and Florida 64
WOMEN: A&M 67 and Oregon 51

ACTUAL Points are:
MEN: A&M 36 and Florida 28
WOMEN: Oregon 30 and A&M 26

I have listed the completed events in which the actual points and the expected points are not the same. The point differences follow each event in parenthesis.

Florida MEN: 400m (+1), triple (-1), Dec (-4)

A&M WOMEN: 100 (+2), triple (+4)
Oregon WOMEN: 400m (-1), 5K (-4), pole vault (-3), triple (-1)

DAY 3 – Friday –- A GREAT DAY FOR THE AGGIE KINGDOM

Each individual/relay is followed by a set of numbers.
The first number is their rank based on season's best performance.
The second number is their place prediction by T&F News.

MEN:
Decathlon completed: Trinity Otto (8/-) who was not expected to place, incredibly finished 3rd giving us 6 unexpected points. In addition, Gary Horn (5/6) of Florida, who was definitely expected to give Florida points, did not do so, finishing 15th. The result of this event was a 9-point swing in the AGGIES favor.
High jump: none
Hammer: none
400H: none
100m: Gerald Phiri (7/5) - A&M, Curtis Mitchell (14/7) - A&M. Gerald, expected to finish 5th, finished 4th. Curtis, expected to finish 7th, finished 6th. Total points scored were 8 points. This was also two points better than expected.
800m: none
Steeple: none
400m: Calvin Smith (1/5) - Florida, Demetrius Pinder (3/6) - A&M, Tabarie (7/4) - A&M. Not exactly what we were hoping for. Calvin beat both Demetrius and Tabarie. Demetrius expected to finish 6th did but Tabarie, expected to finish 4th , finished last (8th). We earned 4 points, which was 4 points less than expected. Calvin finished 4th instead of the expected 5th. Therefore, the 400m was a swing of 5 points towards the gators. This hurt.

WOMEN:
Pole vault: Melissa Gergel (3/6) – Oregon. Oregon continues to help us as Melissa, expecting to earn 3 points, did not place, finishing 10th for a 3 point swing towards the AGGIES.
Shot put: none
400H: none
100m: Jeneba Tarmoh (6/5) - A&M & Porscha Lucas (4/2) - A&M. Expecting to finish 2nd and 5th, Porscha (2nd) and Jeneba (3rd) earned 14 valuable points for the AGGIES, which is also a 2-point swing toward A&M in projected points.
800m: Anne Kesselring (12/6) – Oregon finished 6th instead of the expected 5th resulting in another point swing of 1 point towards the AGGIES.
400m: Jessica Beard (2/2) - A&M, Keshia Baker (1/3) – Oregon. Excellent results. Jessica beat Keshia and finished 2nd . Keisha finished 4th instead of third for another point swing of 1 point to the AGGIES.
5K: Oregon picked up their expected points in this race.

Oregon has essentially eliminated themselves.

Saturday’s Events
Listed below are today's participants from Florida and A&M (MEN) and Oregon and A&M (WOMEN)
Each individual is followed by a set of numbers.
The first number is their rank based on season's best performance.
The second number is their place prediction by T&F News.
The third number is their place in the prelims.

WOMEN:
Javelin: Emalie Humphreys (9/10) and Hillary Pustka (16/-) will be trying to obtain more unpredicted points for our side.
Long jump: Jamesha Youngblood (3/3) – Oregon, Vashti Thomas (7/8) – A&M, and Ashika Charan (22/-) – A&M. Jamesha did not place in the triple and will be looking to do much better in the long jump. Ashika very unexpectedly beat Jamesha in the triple on Thursday finishing eighth for a point for the AGGIES.
4x100: A&M (1/1/1), Oregon (4/4/5). The AGGIES are expecting to win this one.
1500: Alex Kosinski (18/-/7) and Jordan Hasay (8/-/10) could pick up some points for Oregon here. Alex finished third in the 5K Friday – may be too tired.
200m: Porscha Lucas (2/1/1), Jeneba Tarmoh (1/3/2), and Dominique Duncan (15/-/5) are projected to earn 16 points. Dominique was definitely not expected to be in the finals – great effort.
Steeple: none
100H: Vashti Thomas (13/-/7) will not beat the Queen (Virginia Tech) and her assistant, but will earn at least one point for the AGGIES.
4x400: Oregon (1/3/3) and A&M (5/2/1). The Ags did much better than expected in the prelims. Can they do it again? Probably not. However, we should finish in the top 3.

MEN:
Long jump: Christian Taylor (1/1) will certainly win this one for the gators. Melvin Echard (8/-) and Julian Reid (23/-) will be trying hard to add unexpected points for the AGGIES. Julian is a great jumper, finishing third his freshman year. His injuries have significantly hampered him this year and he barely qualified for this meet. Let’s hope that he has recovered from his injuries.
Shot put: Kemal Mesic (2/2) will be expected to finish first or second for the gators.
4x100: Florida (1/1/1) will be hard to beat. A&M (3/2/2) will have to concentrate on finishing no worse than second.
1500: none
200m: Curtis Mitchell (1/1/1) and Gerald Phiri (11/6/4) will be trying to get us at least 13 points. More would be great!
110H: none
5K: none
4x400: Florida (1/2/1), A&M (2/1/5). This race may decide the championship like last year’s race did. By the time this race starts, we will know exactly what has to be done to win and let’s hope we accomplish that goal. In the prelims, we won our heat but had the 5th best time overall. Fifth place in this race will probably cost us the meet. Christian Taylor will be running the third leg for Florida. He will probably be the high point winner of the meet.

We were expected to break even with the Florida MEN in the relays – 18 points each. We may not be able to do this. If we do, we should win.

Great job recapping everything - like I said at the end of the Day 3 thread a couple things could help the guys -

1. Getting more than the 13 points in the 200 - obviously need Mitchell to win the 200 but Phiri could finish higher than 6th.
2. In the SP competition be helpful if Mesic (Flor SP) did not get 2nd (his best is just over 19 meters) while Whiting has a best of almost 22 meters so hopefully some of the others that have close to or slightly over 19 meters challenge Mesic for 2nd (Finley from KU might have the best chance)
3. Getting any points out of the LJ and possibly having one of our Big 12 brethren (Goodwin - UT or one of the Nebraska jumpers) win the competition and knock Taylor down.

Certainly looks like it will come down to the 4X400 on the guys side - will be interesting to see if Henry adds Mitchell to the relay even though he would have already run the 4X100 and the 200 earlier in the day.

Thanks for these updates. With all the big talk about the Big XII breakup, it has been hard to find any news on this meet.

Thanks to all who have provided updates and insight over days 1-3.

I'm so proud of our women's team for stepping up. When Gabby went down on Wednesday, I thought we were done.

Best of luck to both teams today. Gig 'em.

Oregon WOMEN: 400m (-1), 5K (-4), pole vault (-3), triple (-1)

+ means we picked up points that we weren't predicted to get.

- means we lost points we were predicted to get.

we want to have a lot of +

we want UF and UO to have a lot of -

You have not accounted for the (-2) points that Wilks lost by not qualifying in the 100 or the 200 for florida

Field Events are starting.

Mens Long Jump is the important one of the day.

A&M has two competitors not expected to point and Florida is expected to win.

Foul for Echard on first long jump.

Legal jump for Julian Reid, performance boards down, so not sure of distance. 25-foot range.

Florida's Christian Taylor, foul on first attempt.

Texas' Marquise Goodwin jumps 8.15, 26-9 to wrap up first round of first flight in long jump.
