Can someone explain the difference between indoor and outdoor track? Are there different events? Curious as to why we win outdoor and not indoor with the same people.

Indoor has a few different events. There is no javelin in indoor and both our men and women have All-American jav throwers. They also run a 60 meter dash and 60 meter hurdles as opposed to 100 meters and 110 meters. The bulk of our short sprinters tend to be better 100 meter than 60 meter runners.

The big difference is there is no 4X100 in Indoor track and instead they run a Distance Medley Relay (which is made up of a 1200, 400, 800 and 1600 meter leg).

The other difference is that the track is only 200 Meters for indoor instead of 400M at outdoor.

If you're running the 200 & the 400 in the inside lanes the curves are really hard on your ankles. Slows people down. And if the track is banked, the outside lanes especially have a big advantage.

To win either one, you have to have a lot of good performances with at least a little luck. Just hasn't gone our way indoors. Yet.

Discus, hammer throw

The hammer throw is replaced by the weight throw in indoor; the difference being the weight throw uses a heavier apparatus than the hammer. There also is no discus.

I didn't mention these earlier though as we do not have any competitors who throw at the National Championship meet in these events.

I think in order to be competitive indoors, you must have a solid middle distance crew. See Oregon, tu from a few years ago, etc.

makes it easier cdonlee that's for sure...When I was on the team I am pretty sure coach told me a story about Arkansas winning a national title by going 1-2 in the 3km/5km and then winning the dmr and using 4 people all up!

that's 46 pts

Middle distance also helps at Indoor Big 12s. Whereas outdoors you have the 400, 800, 1500 (and maybe 400H), indoors you have the 400, 600 Yard, 800, 1000, Mile, and DMR. Anyone with some talent and a kick can score indoors. Outdoors on the other hand . . .
